Power Steering Fluid Cooler: Service and Repair




Power Steering Fluid Cooler Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Open the hood.
2. Place a drain pan under the vehicle.
3. Siphon the fluid from the reservoir to prevent excess spillage.




4. Loosen the upper bolt on the radiator support brace (1) and remove the lower bolt (2). Swing the support bracket aside.





Note: When pipes/hoses are disconnected, plug or cap all openings of components during service. Failure to do so could result in contamination or loss of power steering fluid and damage to the system.

5. Disconnect the power steering cooler from the pipes at the fittings. Discard the O-ring seals.





Note: Do not discard the rubber spacer.

6. Remove the power steering cooler retaining bolt from the core support.
7. Remove the power steering cooler from the vehicle.
8. Disconnect the power steering cooler inlet and outlet pipe routing clip from the core support.




9. Compress the clamp (1) and disconnect the power steering cooler outlet pipe/hose (2) from the power steering pump.




10. Disconnect the power steering cooler inlet hose fitting from the power steering gear. Discard the O-ring seal.
11. Remove the cooler inlet and outlet pipes/hoses from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

1. Position the cooler inlet and outlet pipes/hoses to the vehicle.





Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

2. Using a new O-ring seal, connect the power steering cooler inlet pipe/hose fitting to the power steering gear.

Tighten the power steering cooler inlet pipe fitting to 28 Nm (20 lb ft).




3. Compress the clamp (1) and install the power steering cooler outlet pipe/hose (2) to the power steering pump.




4. Position the power steering cooler to the radiator support, install the spacer and the mounting bolt (1).

Tighten the power steering cooler mounting bolt to 5 Nm (44 lb in).




5. Position the radiator support bracket to the original position and install the lower mounting bolt (2).

Tighten the upper (1) and lower (2) radiator mounting bolts to 5 Nm (44 lb in).




6. Using a new O-ring seals, connect the power steering cooler inlet and outlet cooler pipes/hoses to the power steering cooler.

Tighten the fittings to 28 Nm (20 lb ft).

7. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding (Service and Repair).
8. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
9. Close the hood.
