Pinpoint Test AE: Intermittent No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, Communication Can Be Intermittently Established
Normal Operation
An open circuit HS-CAN (+) or circuit HS-CAN (-) may cause intermittent or unreliable communication to all modules on the HS-CAN.
The following modules communicate on the HS-CAN:
- 4X4 control module (if equipped)
- ABS module
- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) (if equipped)
- Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) (if equipped)
- Head Up Display (HUD) module (if equipped)
- Headlamp Control Module (HCM) (if equipped)
- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) (gateway module)
- Occupant Classification System Module (OCSM)
- Parking Aid Module (PAM) (if equipped)
- PCM
- Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) (part of the steering gear)
- Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module (if equipped)
- Restraints Control Module (RCM)
- Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM) (if equipped)
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
PINPOINT TEST AE: INTERMITTENT NO HS-CAN COMMUNICATION, COMMUNICATION CAN BE INTERMITTENTLY ESTABLISHED
NOTE: Various modules set network DTCs during this test procedure. Clear the DTCs from all modules after the diagnostic procedure is complete.
NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings. Refer to Battery, Mounting and Cables Battery Disconnect.

AE1 CHECK THE DLC PINS FOR DAMAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the scan tool cable from the Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Inspect DLC pins 6 and 14 for damage.
- Are DLC pins 6 and 14 OK?
Yes
GO to AE2.
No
REPAIR the DLC as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

AE2 CHECK THE HS-CAN TERMINATION RESISTANCE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.
- Is the resistance between 54 and 66 ohms?
Yes
GO to AE3.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test AF. Pinpoint Tests AF: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

AE3 CHECK THE HS-CAN (+) AND HS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and ground.
- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?
Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AE4.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test AF. Pinpoint Tests AF: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

AE4 CHECK THE HS-CAN (+) AND HS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between the DLC C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and ground.
- Are the voltages greater than 6 volts?
Yes
REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
No
GO to AE5.

AE5 CHECK FOR RESTORED COMMUNICATION WITH THE PCM DISABLED
NOTE: An Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) session must be established prior to disabling the PCM in this test step. If the PCM has failed communication during multiple attempts to identify the vehicle, first identify the vehicle manually by entering a PCM part number, calibration number or tear tag when prompted by IDS.
NOTE: When a vehicle is manually identified by a PCM part number, calibration number or tear tag, the IDS does not automatically run a network test. The network test must be manually selected and run.
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: Battery Junction Box (BJB) Fuses 23 (7.5A) and 47 (20A) .
- Disconnect: Smart Junction Box (SJB) Fuse 37 (10A) .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to Pinpoint Test A. Pinpoint Test A: The PCM Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuses.
If the vehicle is equipped with a Headlamp Control Module (HCM), GO to AE6.
If the vehicle is not equipped with an HCM, GO to AE7.

AE6 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE HCM DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB Fuse 33 (10A) .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to Pinpoint Test K. Pinpoint Test K: The Headlamp Control Module (HCM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to AE7.

AE7 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE ABS MODULE, C-CM AND PSCM DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: Battery Junction Box (BJB) Fuse 12 (20A) and 15 (15A) .
- Disconnect: Smart Junction Box (SJB) Fuse 34 (5A) .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to AE8.
No
INSTALL the removed fuses.
If the vehicle is equipped with a Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM), GO to AE9.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a SASM, GO to AE10.

AE8 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE ABS MODULE, C-CM OR PSCM DISCONNECTED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect modules one at a time until other HS-CAN modules pass the network test. Skip to the end once network operation is restored.
- Disconnect: ABS Module C135 .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Disconnect: C-CM C1582 .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Disconnect: PSCM C1467a .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?
Yes
CONNECT all modules.
For restored operation with the ABS module disconnected, GO to Pinpoint Test B. Pinpoint Test B: The ABS Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
For restored operation with the C-CM disconnected, GO to Pinpoint Test I. Pinpoint Test I: The Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) Does Not Communicate With the Scan Tool
For restored operation with the PSCM disconnected, GO to Pinpoint Test D. Pinpoint Test D: The Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
CONNECT all modules. An intermittent fault is not present. GO to Pinpoint Test AF. Pinpoint Tests AF: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

AE9 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE IPC, HUD MODULE AND SASM DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB Fuses 26 (10A), 29 (5A), 31 (10A) .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to AE10.
No
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to AE11.

AE10 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE IPC, HUD MODULE OR SASM DISCONNECTED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect modules one at a time until other HS-CAN modules pass the network test. Skip to the end once network operation is restored.
- Disconnect: IPC C220 .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Disconnect: HUD Module C2395 .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Disconnect: SASM C2412 .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?
Yes
CONNECT all modules.
For restored operation with the IPC disconnected, GO to Pinpoint Test C. Pinpoint Test C: The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
For restored operation with the HUD module disconnected, GO to Pinpoint Test G. Pinpoint Test G: The Head Up Display (HUD) Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
For restored operation with the SASM disconnected, GO to Pinpoint Test L. Pinpoint Test L: The Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
CONNECT all modules. An intermittent fault is not present. GO to Pinpoint Test AF. Pinpoint Tests AF: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

AE11 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE RCM DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB Fuse 32 (10A) .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to Pinpoint Test E. Pinpoint Test E: The Restraints Control Module (RCM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to AE12.

AE12 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE OCSM DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB Fuse 46 (7.5A) .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to Pinpoint Test F. Pinpoint Test F: The Occupant Classification System Module (OCSM) Does Not Communicate With the Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuse.
If the vehicle is equipped with a 4X4 control module and/or Parking Aid Module (PAM), GO to AE13.
If the vehicle not is equipped with a 4X4 control module and/or PAM, GO to AE15.

AE13 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE 4X4 CONTROL MODULE AND PAM DISABLED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect: SJB Fuses 11 (10A) and 35 (10A) .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to AE14.
No
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to AE15.

AE14 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE 4X4 CONTROL MODULE OR PAM DISCONNECTED
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Disconnect modules one at a time until other HS-CAN modules pass the network test. Skip to the end once network operation is restored.
- Disconnect: 4X4 Control Module C460 .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Disconnect: PAM C4014 .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?
Yes
CONNECT all modules.
For restored operation with the 4X4 control module disconnected, GO to Pinpoint Test H. Pinpoint Test H: The 4X4 Control Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
For restored operation with the PAM disconnected, GO to Pinpoint Test J. Pinpoint Test J: The Parking Aid Module (PAM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
CONNECT all modules. An intermittent fault is not present. GO to Pinpoint Test AF. Pinpoint Tests AF: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

AE15 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - APIM
NOTE: When re-running the network test, the network test application must be first closed or the screen display reverts back to the prior run network test results.
- Inspect the vehicle for an Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM).
- Is the vehicle equipped with an APIM?
Yes
GO to AE16.
No
GO to AE17.

- Disconnect: SJB Fuse 14 (10A) .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to Pinpoint Test AD. Pinpoint Tests AD: The Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to AE17.

- Disconnect: SJB Fuses 12 (7.5A) and 27 (20A) .
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test .
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?
Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to Pinpoint Test AC. Pinpoint Tests AC: The Remote Function Actuator (RFA) Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
No
INSTALL the removed fuses. An intermittent fault is not present. GO to Pinpoint Test AF. Pinpoint Tests AF: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding
