Timing Belt: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the engine coolant.

3. Remove in the order shown in the image, referring to Removal Note.
4. Install in the reverse order of removal, referring to Installation Note.

Removal Note:
1. Crankshaft pulley

Caution: The crankshaft position sensor rotor is on the rear of the pulley and can be damaged easily.

- Hold the crankshaft pulley by using the SST and remove the crankshaft pulley lock bolt.
2. Timing belt
- Before removing the timing belt, perform the following operation:
a. Install the crankshaft pulley lock bolt before timing belt removal.

b. Turn the crankshaft to align the matching marks of the pulleys as shown.

c. Mark the timing belt to indicate direction of rotation for proper reassembly.
d. Remove the timing belt.

Caution: The following will damage the belt and shorten its life; Forcefully twisting it, turning it inside out, bending it, or allowing oil or grease on it.

Inspection:
Crankshaft Pulley

Caution: The crankshaft position sensor rotor is on the rear of the pulley and can be damaged easily.

- Inspect the crankshaft pulley and sensor rotor for damage. Verify that the tips (arrows) are not broken, chipped, or cracked. Replace if necessary.

Belt Components
- Inspect the following parts:
a. Timing belt
b. Tensioner pulley
c. Timing belt auto tensioner

Installation Note:
1. Timing belt auto tensioner

a. Set a flat washer under the tensioner body to prevent damage to the body plug.

Caution: Pressing the tensioner rod with more than 9,807 N (1,000 kgf, 2,200 lbf) can damage the tensioner spring.

b. Slowly press in the tensioner rod by using a press or a vise.
c. Insert a pin in the body as shown to hold the tensioner rod.

d. Install the collar, then install the auto tensioner onto the cylinder block.

Tightening torque: 19-25 N.m (1.9-2.6 kgf, 14-18 ft.lbf)

2. Timing belt
a. Install the crankshaft pulley lock bolt.

b. Align the timing marks as shown.

c. Install the timing belt in the following order:
(1) Timing belt pulley
(2) No.1 idler pulley
(3) LH camshaft pulley (EX)
(4) LH camshaft pulley (IN)
(5) Tensioner pulley
(6) RH camshaft pulley (EX)
(7) RH camshaft pulley (IN)

d. Push the timing belt down and install No.2 idler pulley.

Tightening torque: 38-51 Nm (3.8-5.3 kgf-m, 28-38 ft-lb)

e. Verify that the timing mark of each pulley is still aligned after installation of No.2 idler pulley.

f. Turn the crankshaft twice in the direction of rotation, and realign the timing marks.
g. Verify that all timing marks are correctly aligned. If necessary, repeat steps b-e.
h. Remove the pin from the auto tensioner.
i. Again turn the crankshaft twice and realign the timing marks.

Caution: Be sure not to apply tension other than that of the auto tensioner.

j. Check the timing belt deflection.

Timing belt deflection: 5-7 mm (0.20-0.27 in)/98 N (10 kgf, 22 lbf)

k. If the deflection is not correct, check the timing belt auto tensioner and replace if necessary.

3. Crankshaft pulley

Caution: The crankshaft position sensor rotor is on the rear of the pulley, and can be damaged easily.

- Install the crankshaft pulley by using the SST.

Tightening torque: 157-166 N.m (16.0-17.0 kgf.m, 116-122 ft.lbf)

Steps After Installation
1. Fill the radiator and coolant reservoir with the specified amount and type of engine coolant.
2. Perform the necessary engine adjustments.
