Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Steering Gear: Testing and Inspection

STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE INSPECTION

1. Remove the steering gear and linkage. Removal and Replacement

2. Remove the tie-rod end and boot. Steering Gear And Linkage Disassembly

3. Measure the rotation torque of the pinion shaft using a crescent wrench and pull scale. (speed measurement reference 90-120°/s)

a. Install the crescent wrench to the steering gear.

b. Measure the length from the pinion shaft center to the crescent wrench end (application point of pull scale) as shown in the figure. This is dimension A.

c. The rotation torque of the pinion shaft can be calculated using the following formula Measured value using pull scale (N {kgf, lbf}) = rotation torque of the pinion shaft (Nm {kgf-cm, in-lbf})/length A (m {cm, in})

Pinion shaft rotation torque (center of rack ± 180°)
- 0.7-1.1 Nm {7.2-11 kgf-cm, 6.2-9.7 in-lbf} [Pull scale reading: 0.7-1.1 Nm {7.2-11 kgf-cm, 6.2-9.7 in-lbf}/A (m {cm, in})]

- If not within the specification, replace the steering gear. Removal and Replacement
