Freewheel

LOCATION
- In the front planetary gear set a freewheel is installed between the sun gear and stator shaft and in the rear planetary gear set between the sun gear and intermediate shaft.

TASK
- To optimize individual shifts and support the individual components of a planetary gear set against each other or against the transmission housing in one direction of rotation so that it is possible to transmit torque.

DESIGN
- The freewheel consists of a outer race (12), inner race (13), a number of clamping members (14) and a clamping member cage (15).

FUNCTION
- If the inner race (13) of the freewheel is fixed and the outer race ( 12) moves in the direction of rotation "A", the clamping members (14) assume an inclined position due to their special contour and make possible a freewheel function. The outer race (12) slides over the clamping members (14) with a low level of friction. If the direction of the outer race (12) changes into direction of rotation "B", the clamping members (14) stand up and connect the outer and inner race (12, 13) together in a locking function.
