Timing Belt: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove accessory drive belt.
3. Remove drive belt tensioner.
4. Remove timing belt cover retaining nuts.
5. Remove timing belt cover.
6. Align timing mark on camshaft sprocket with timing mark on cylinder head, Fig. 3. Ensure crankshaft sprocket is aligned with the timing mark on the oil pump housing.
7. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt.
8. Pry tensioner away from timing belt and tighten bolt.
9. Remove spark plugs.
10. Raise and support vehicle.
11. Remove righthand splash shield.
12. Remove crankshaft dampener.
13. Remove timing belt from vehicle.
14. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install timing belt over sprockets in a counterclockwise direction starting at crankshaft. Keep belt span between the crankshaft and camshaft tight while installing over remaining sprockets.
b. Loosen tensioner bolt and allow tensioner to contact timing belt.
c. Rotate engine two complete turns. Ensure timing marks align and tighten tensioner bolt.
d. Tighten attaching bolts to specifications.
