P0335
2AZ-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0335: Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit
DTC P0335 - Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit
DTC P0339 - Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Intermittent
DESCRIPTION
The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor system consists of a CKP sensor plate and a pickup coil.
The sensor plate has 34 teeth and is installed on the crankshaft. The pickup coil is made of wound copper wire, an iron core and magnet. The sensor plate rotates and, as each tooth passes by the pickup coil, a pulse signal is created. The pickup coil generates 34 signals per engine revolution. Based on these signals, the ECM calculates the crankshaft position and engine RPM. Using these calculations, the fuel injection time and ignition timing are controlled.
- Reference: Inspection using an oscilloscope.
HINT:
- The correct waveform is as shown.
- G2+ stand for the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor signal, and NE+ stands for the CKP sensor signal.
- Grounding failure of the shielded wire may cause noise in waveforms.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
If there is no signal from the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor despite the engine revolving, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the sensor.
If the malfunction is not repaired successfully, a DTC is set 10 seconds after the engine is next started.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
- If no problem is found through this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure, troubleshoot the engine mechanical systems.
- Check the engine speed. The engine speed can be checked by using an intelligent tester or a Techstream. To check, follow the operation below:
1. Connect the intelligent tester or the Techstream to the DLC3.
2. Start the engine.
3. Turn the tester ON.
4. Select the following menu items:
1. Intelligent tester - Select: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / PRIMARY / ENGINE SPD.
2. Techstream - Select: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Engine Speed.
- Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester or the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
1. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER OR TECHSTREAM (ENGINE SPEED)
(a) Connect an intelligent tester or a Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(c) Turn the tester ON.
(d) Select the following menu items:
(1) Intelligent tester - Select: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / PRIMARY / ENGINE SPD.
(2) Techstream - Select: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Engine Speed.
(e) Start the engine.
(f) Read the values displayed on the tester while the engine is running.
OK:
Correct values are displayed.
HINT:
- To check the engine speed change, display the graph on the tester.
- If the engine does not start, check the engine speed while cranking.
- If the engine speed indicated on the tester remains at zero (0), there may be an open or short in the crankshaft position sensor circuit.
NG -- INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (RESISTANCE)
OK -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS
2. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (RESISTANCE)
(a) Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector.
(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance:
(c) Reconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector.
NG -- REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR - ECM)
(a) Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector.
(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance (Check for open):
Standard resistance (Check for short):
(d) Reconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector.
(e) Reconnect the ECM connector.
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.
4. CHECK SENSOR INSTALLATION (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR)
(a) Check the crankshaft position sensor installation.
OK:
Sensor is installed correctly.
NG -- SECURELY REINSTALL SENSOR
OK -- Continue to next step.
5. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLATE (TEETH OF SENSOR PLATE)
(a) Check the teeth of the sensor plate.
OK:
Sensor plate does not have any cracks or deformation.
NG -- REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLATE
OK -- Continue to next step.
6. REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
(a) Replace crankshaft position sensor Removal.
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
7. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS
(a) Connect an intelligent tester or a Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(c) Turn the tester ON.
(d) Clear DTCs DTC Check / Clear.
(e) Start the engine.
(f) Select the following menu items:
(1) Intelligent tester - Select: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DTC INFO / CURRENT CODES.
(2) Techstream - Select: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
(g) Read DTCs.
Result:
HINT: If the engine does not start, replace the ECM.
B -- REPLACE ECM
A -- END
