Output Diagnostic Test Mode (Function 03)

Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) activates the following DTM components in the sequence shown:
1 - Injector No. 1 Cyl. N30
2 - Injector No. 2 Cyl. N31
3 - Injector No. 3 Cyl. N32
4 - Injector No. 4 Cyl. N33
7 - EVAP canister purge regulator valve 1 -N80-
8 - Secondary Air Injection solenoid valve -N112-
9 - Secondary Air Injection pump relay -J299-

Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required
- VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool using VAG 1551/3 adaptor cable
- VAG 1598/22 Test Box
- Fluke 83 multimeter
- VAG 1527B Voltage tester
- VW 1594 Adaptor kit
- Wiring diagram

Requirement







- Fuses 10, 28, 29, 32, 34 and 43 must be OK


NOTE:
- Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) can only be carried out with the engine NOT running and ignition switched ON.
- Output DTM will be aborted if the engine is started or a rotational impulse is recognized.
- During Output DTM, individual DTM components will be activated until you advance to the next component by pressing the -> button.
- DTM components are either checked acoustically or by touch.
- If you need to repeat the Output DTM checks: (the engine must not have been run) briefly switch OFF the ignition for approx. 2 seconds.
- The electric fuel pump will run during the complete Output DTM.
- Output DTM will abort after 10 minutes.


Work sequence

- Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool. [1][2][3][4]Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Switch ON ignition but do NOT start engine.
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select "Engine Electronics" address word 01.

- Operate Scan Tool taking displayed information into account.
- Press 0 and 3 buttons to select Function 03: "Output Diagnostic Test Mode."
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

Fuel injectors N30 to N33, activating

- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Injector cylinder 1 -N30



NOTE: The fuel pump must run and the flow noise must be distinctly audible at the fuel pressure regulator. If the fuel pump does not run, check activation.


- Open throttle.
- As soon as the Closed Throttle Position switch opens, the number 1 Cyl. injector will click 5 times.
- Press -> button each time to advance to the next injector (advancing is also possible without testing each individual injector).


NOTE: All injectors can be checked this way, one after the other.


If one of the injectors does not activate (does not click)
- Check fuel injectors.

EVAP canister purge regulator valve 1 N80, triggering

- Press -> button.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
EVAP canister purge regulator valve 1 -N80



- The EVAP canister purge regulator valve 1 must click until the next DTM component is activated by pressing the -> button.

If valve clicks but a malfunction is still suspected (valve does not open or close):
- Pull hose OFF EVAP canister at solenoid valve.
- Connect an auxiliary hose to the vacant valve connection.
- Blow into auxiliary hose during Output DTM (in direction of Throttle Control Module).
- Valve must open and close

If valve does not click:
- Continue check.

Secondary Air Injection valve N112, triggering

- Press -> button.

Secondary Air Injection valve -N112



- The Secondary Air Injection valve must run until the next DTM component is activated by pressing the -> button.

If relay does not click
- Continue check.

Secondary Air Injection pump relay J299, triggering

- Press -> button.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary Air Injection pump relay -J299



- J299 Secondary Air Injection pump relay activates the Secondary Air Injection pump motor which must run in intervals until the next DTM component is activated by pressing the -> button.

If Secondary Air Injection pump motor V101 does not run in intervals
- Continue check.
- Press -> button.

- Press -0- and -6- buttons to select "End output" function 06.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input
- Switch OFF ignition.


NOTE: After completion of the Output Diagnostic Test Mode, switch OFF the ignition. If it is not switched OFF before cranking, the engine will not start because the fuel injectors and ignition coil power output stage will not be activated.

Continuation Of Check If The EVAP Canister Purge Regulator Valve 1 Does Not Click







- Pull connector -1- OFF solenoid valve -2- and connect VAG 1527B Voltage tester to disconnected connector using jumper wires from VW 1594 adaptor kit.
- LED must blink

If LED blinks
- Proceed with Output DTM until completed.
- Switch OFF ignition.
- Replace solenoid valve -2-

If LED does not blink:
- Proceed with Output DTM until completed.
- Switch OFF ignition.







- Connect Test Box VAG 1598/22 to Control Module wiring harness.
- Check wiring for open circuit between Test Box socket 15 + 2-pin harness connector terminal 2 using Wiring diagram.
- Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and Ground.
- Specification: Infinity Ohms
- Check wiring for open circuit between 2-pin harness connector terminal 1 and fuel pump relay J17 using Wiring diagram.
- Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If wiring is OK:
- Replace Engine Control Module.

Continuation Of Check If Secondary Air Injection Valve Does Not Click







- Remove connector -1- from solenoid valve -2- and connect VAG 1527B Voltage Tester to disconnected connector using jumper wires from VW 1594 Adaptor kit.
- LED must blink

If LED blinks
- Proceed with Output DTM until completed.
- Switch OFF ignition.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection valve N112.

If LED does not blink
- Proceed with Output DTM until completed.
- Switch OFF ignition.







- Connect Test Box VAG 1598/22 to Control Module wiring harness.
- Check wire between Test Box socket 33 + 2-pin harness connector terminal 2 for open circuit using Wiring diagram.
- Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms
- Additionally check wire for short to battery positive and to Ground.
- Specification: Infinity Ohms
- Check wire between 2-pin harness connector terminal 1 and fuse relay panel for open circuit using Wiring diagram.
- Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If wiring is OK:
- Replace Engine Control Module.

Continuation of check if Secondary Air Injection pump motor does not run in intervals







- Disconnect 2-pin harness connector -1- from Secondary Air Injection pump motor -2- and connect VAG 1527B Voltage tester to disconnected connector using jumper wires from VW 1594 adaptor kit.
- LED must blink

If LED blinks
- Proceed with Output DTM until completed.
- Switch OFF ignition.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection pump motor V101

If LED does not blink:
- Proceed with Output DTM until completed.
- Switch OFF ignition.







- Check fuse for Secondary Air Injection pump relay J299 -arrow-.

If fuse OK:







- Disconnect Secondary Air Injection pump relay -arrow- from fuse/relay panel.


NOTE:
- If tools are required to remove relays or Control Modules from the fuse/relay panel; first disconnect battery Ground.
- Obtain the radio anti-theft code from the customer before disconnecting the battery Ground strap!


- Check Voltage supply (terminal 30) for Secondary air pump relay J299 per wiring diagram: if necessary replace Secondary Air Injection pump relay J299.

If LED does not blink, and relay does not click, proceed with Output Diagnostic Test Mode until completed.
- Switch OFF ignition.







- Connect VAG 1598/22 Test Box to Control Module wiring harness.
- Check wire between Test Box connector 30 and terminal 4 of relay panel for open circuit using Wiring diagram.
- Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms

If wiring is OK:
- Replace Engine Control Module.
