Replacing Front Brake Pads

Replacing front brake pads

Special tools:
951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40 951 2834 Torque Socket 21mm

General

Caution! Replace the brake pads when the minimum thickness is 2 mm.

Removing the front brake pads

Remove:
- the hub cap and the wheel
- the screw from the lower locating pin for the brake caliper.
Twist the brake caliper upwards. Remove the brake pads.
Remove the wear indicator.

Note! Do not depress the brake pedal while the brake pads are removed.

Cleaning and checking the front brake caliper

Clean brake pad contact surfaces in the brake caliper and on the caliper mounting. Check the dirt guard for the piston. Replace the dirt guard if it is worn. Recondition the brake caliper if the dirt guard is broken. See Front brake caliper reconditioning Front Brake Caliper Reconditioning.

Note! If the dirt guard is worn, dirt may have entered the cylinder. Therefore the brake caliper must be reconditioned.

Checking the front brake disc

Check the brake disc surface. Check the lateral runout of the brake disc if the disc is uneven. See Measuring brake disc lateral runout (front/rear) Testing and Inspection. The brake disc must be replaced if it is very worn or grooved. See Front brake disc replacement Front Brake Disc Replacement.

Note! Minimum disc thickness = 21.5 mm. If installing new brake pads, the minimum disc thickness must be at least 22.1 mm.

Checking the locating pins for the front brake caliper
Check the rubber bushings on the locating pins. Replace if necessary. If necessary, lubricate the pins with Volvo silicone grease (P/N 1161325-4) and install them in the rubber bushings. The pins must slide easily into the bushings.

Installing the front brake pads

Press the piston into the brake caliper. Check that no brake fluid comes out of the brake fluid reservoir. Check that dirt guard is correctly positioned.
Press down the wear indicators on the brake pads.
Install the brake pads and twist the brake caliper down. Check that the screws for the brake pads fit in the brake caliper.
Secure the brake caliper. Tighten to 35 Nm.

Checking the brake fluid level
Depress the brake pedal a few times. Check the brake fluid level.

Installing the wheels

Check that the mating surface on the brake discs and the wheel rims are clean.
Lubricate the hub center guide for the rim using anti-corrosion agent, Volvo P/N 1161038-3.
Install the wheel. Tighten the nuts lightly. Then tighten the screws crosswise. Tighten to 110 Nm. When tightening using an impact wrench, torque socket 951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40 951 2834 Torque Socket 21mm must be used.

Note! Crosswise tightening and the correct tightening torques are important to avoid stresses in the brake disc.
