Voltage Signal: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The alternator FR signal reports a signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM). when the alternator is charging.
OPERATION
When the internal voltage regulator grounds the field coil in the alternator, it also completes ground at the ECM. The ECM uses this signal to modify idle control signals to insure a stable idle during electric load conditions (i.e.. air conditioning, headlamps).
