Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Charging System: Testing and Inspection

If the charging system light does not come ON or does not go OFF, or the battery is dead or low, test the following items in the order listed below:

Troubleshooting (Part 1 Of 4):

Troubleshooting (Part 2 Of 4):

1. Battery
2. Charging System Light
3. Voltage Check
4. Alternator/Regulator

Troubleshooting (Part 3 Of 4):

NOTE: Be sure the battery is sufficiently charged.

Troubleshooting (Part 4 Of 4):

CAUTION: The voltage will rise quickly when the alternator is full-fielded. Do not allow the voltage to exceed 18 V; it may damage the electrical system.

NOTE: Attach a probe to the VA-4O full field test lead, and insert the probe into the full field access hole at the back of the alternator. Switch the field selector to the "A (Ground)" position momentarily, and check the amperage reading.
