Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Piston: Testing and Inspection

INSPECTION
1. Check the piston for distortion or cracks.

NOTE: If the cylinder is bored, an oversized piston must be used.

2. Measure the piston diameter at a point 15 mm (0.6 inch) from the bottom of the skirt.

Piston Diameter:
Standard (New): 80.98 - 80.99 mm (3.188 - 3.189 inches)
Service Limit: 80.97 mm (3.188 inches)

3. Calculate the difference between cylinder bore diameter on and piston diameter.

Piston-to-Cylinder Clearance:
Standard (New): 0.010 - 0.040 mm (0.0004 - 0.0016 inch)
Service Limit: 0.05 mm (0.002 inch)

If the clearance is near or exceeds the service limit, inspect the piston and cylinder block for excessive wear.

Oversize Piston Diameter:
0.25: 81.23 - 81.24 mm (3.1980 - 3.1984 inch)
