JANUARY 1989
SUBJECT: PRE-DELIVERY/RECALL CAMPAIGN GK 1984-89 MODEL YEAR AUDI TURBO VEHICLES FUEL SYSTEM MODIFICATION

Dear Audi Dealer:

This is to inform you of the initiation of a pre-delivery/recall campaign involving 1984 through 1988 model year 5000 Turbo and some early production 1989 model year Turbo vehicles. The vehicles involved are within the following vehicle identification number range:

WAU__044_EN032649 - WAU__044-KN051164

Description of the Program

Audi has found that the fuel system's injector seals may harden due to high temperature and alcohol in some fuels. A hardened seal could allow fuel to escape into the engine compartment as a result of turbo pressure. Fuel escaping in this manner could drip onto hot engine components and without warning cause an engine compartment fire.

Remedial Action

To correct this problem, fuel injector seals require replacement with improved seals.

In addition, improved components such as fuel lines, valve cover/gasket and a new hood sound proofing pad must be installed.
