Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.2. Remove three upper engine to transmission bolts.
3. Disconnect ground strap from transmission.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors for speedometer sender, multi-function sender, oxygen sensor, and oxygen sensor heating element.
5. Remove engine protection plate.
6. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold, then separate exhaust pipe behind catalyst and remove pipe and catalyst.
7. Remove drive shaft, then the rear crossmember.
8. Remove shift rod securing bolt from transmission and let shift rod hang.
9. Remove transmission cover plate, then the right axle shaft shield.
10. Disconnect axle shafts from transmission, turn steering wheel to right lock, then tie axle shafts to body of vehicle to secure.
11. Remove clutch slave cylinder.
12. Remove tie rod coupling from steering rack, then turn wheels to the left.
13. Install engine support 10-222A, or equivalent, then support transmission with transmission support VW 1383, or equivalent.
14. Remove transmission strut at left rear and front engine mount.
15. Remove heat shield from bonded rubber bushing, then the bonded rubber bushing support bracket from transmission.
16. Remove bolt for seat belt tensioning cable guide at left rear of transmission, then position cables and guide out of way.
17. Lower right rear subframe by loosening mounting bolts.
18. Remove remaining engine to transmission bolts, then lower transmission from vehicle.
19. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Press clutch slave cylinder in with a lever until bolt can be installed easily.
b. Ensure centering (dowel) sleeves are installed in cylinder block.
c. Tighten nuts and bolts to specifications.
