EGR Temperature Sensor: Testing and Inspection

PRE-TEST REQUIREMENTS

1. Engine coolant temperature at least 176°F (80°C).
2. All electrical consumers (including A/C) switched OFF.
3. Radiator fan must not run while performing tests.
4. Vacuum connections tight and without leaks.
5. Vacuum hoses not pinched or plugged.

TEST PROCEDURE

EGR System Diagram:

1. Disconnect EGR temperature sensor harness connector.
2. Switch multimeter to 20 VDC range.

Connector 2-wire:

3. Connect multimeter between terminals 1 and 2 of harness connector.
4. Turn ignition switch ON, voltage at connector should be:

^ Approximately 5 VDC

^ IF NOT, check wiring and repair as necessary.
^ IF YES, turn ignition switch OFF continue with test

EGR Temperature Sensor V8:

5. Remove EGR temperature sensor from the EGR valve.
6. Switch multimeter to resistance range of 200,000 ohm.
7. Connect multimeter to terminals of the EGR temperature sensor.
8. Submerge the sensor in boiling water, i.e. 176° - 212°F (80° - 100°C) the resistance should be:

^ Between 80,000 and 160,000 ohms

^ IF NOT replace sensor.
^ IF YES, re-install sensor, torque to 15 ft.lb. (20 Nm).

9. Reconnect EGR temperature sensor harness connector.
