A/C System, General Repair Guidelines

A/C Refrigerant System (R-134a), General Repair Guidelines

The A/C refrigerant system must not be opened and discharged unless absolutely necessary due to safety concerns or unless affected components of the system are determined to require replacement.

When performing other under-hood (non A/C) vehicle repairs, the refrigerant system must remain closed.

For A/C system service operations possible without opening the refrigerant system.

Certain service/repair operations mentioned in this manual require the use of special air conditioning tools. Before beginning any servicing/repairs, review the appropriate manual procedure and ensure all special tools and replacement parts are available.

Only a high pressure service valve is provided for A/C system servicing. A low pressure service valve is not installed. Discharging, evacuating and recharging operations must be done using the high pressure service valve only.

NOTE:
- Certain refrigerant system components equipped with control switches and valves are provided with Schrader valves which close automatically when these components are removed/replaced.
- Labels in the engine compartment and on the compressor indicate A/C system is charged with refrigerant R-134a. Do not remove these labels.
