Compression Check: Testing and Inspection



Compression pressure, checking
Special tools and repair equipment required





^ Spark plug wrench 3122 B





^ Compression tester VAG 1381 or VAG 1763

Test requirements:
^ Engine oil temperature at least 30° C
^ Battery voltage at least 12.7 V





Test sequence
^ Remove engine cover -arrows-.
^ Switch off ignition.





^ Unplug connectors -3-.
^ Pull out ignition coils -1-.
^ Use spark plug wrench 3122B to screw out spark plugs.
^ Unplug connectors from all injectors.
^ Fully open throttle valve.
^ Check compression with compression tester VAG 1381 or VAG 1763.

Note: How to use compression tester:

^ Operate starter until tester shows no further pressure increase.





Compression pressure:

^ Install spark plugs and ignition coils.

Note: Replace gaskets for ignition coils if damaged.

^ Check Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory:
^ Guided Fault Finding in VAS 5051; Checking and erasing DTC memory

Note: Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) will have been recorded in DTC memory because connectors have been unplugged. Check and if necessary erase DTC memory after completing check.





Tightening torques
