CAUTION!
On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-off emergency (back-up) battery for Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery. Switch-on emergency (back-up) battery after reconnecting vehicle battery

Removing

Front Information Display Control Head (J685) (MMI screen) must be closed.

Install all cable ties that were loosened or cut off during removal in the same positions.

- Position the steering wheel so that it is as far rearward and down as possible, using the full adjustment range of the steering column adjuster.

- Set front seats to rearmost position and fold backrests to 45° position.

- Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.

- With ignition switched off, disconnect battery Ground (GND) cable.

- Remove airbag unit and steering wheel => [ Driver Airbag ] Driver Airbag.

- Pry the left instrument panel cover off using a screwdriver - arrow -.





- Carefully disengage decorative panel - 1 - from instrument panel using trim removal wedge (3409) - arrows -.





- Open coin tray.





- Slide coin tray panel toward the left out of catch - arrow - and remove.

- Open glove compartment.





- Carefully disengage decorative panel - 1 - with switch strip - starting above the glove compartment - from instrument panel using trim removal wedge (3409).

Be especially careful when releasing clip on the driver's side end of decorative panel.

- Disconnect electrical connector.

- Unbolt driver's side storage compartment - arrows -.





- Disconnect electrical connectors.

- Vehicles with knee airbag: Pull locking mechanism - 2 - in direction of arrow and disconnect electrical harness connectors - 1 - and - 3 -.





- Pry the right instrument panel cover off using a screwdriver - arrow -.





- If present, remove CD changer as follows:





- Insert two hooks of radio removal tool (T10057) into the front of the CD-changer.

Top L - upper left

Top R - upper right

- Remove the CD changer from the mounting frame.

- Disconnect electrical connector.

- Disconnect harness connector for fiber-optic cable.

- Seal the open wiring set connector - 2 - for fiber-optic cable using Protective Cap For Cable Connector (VAS 6223/9) - item 1 -.





The protective cap prevents soiling and damage to fiber optic face, which would impair light transfer.

- Remove the release tool from the CD changer by pressing the locking tabs on the changer.

- If present, remove storage compartment in glove compartment, to do so disengage retaining straps - 1 - and - 2 - in - direction of arrow - using a small screwdriver.





- Pull storage compartment out of glove compartment.

- Remove bolts - arrows -.





- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 1 - for glove compartment wiring harness - 2 - from lead wire - 3 -.





- Vehicles with knee airbag: Pull locking mechanism - 2 - in direction of arrow and disconnect electrical harness connectors - 1 - and - 3 -.





- Remove glove compartment.

Vehicles without rear A/C Control Head (Climatronic)





- Open rear ashtray - 2 -.

- Remove trim - 1 - from mounting frame - arrow -.

- Close the ashtray.

- Remove ashtray from mounting frame - in direction of arrow -.





Vehicles with rear A/C Control Head (Climatronic)





- Pry panel - 1 - out of mounting frame - arrow - using trim removal wedge (3409).

Procedure for all vehicles





- Remove bolts - arrows -.

- Remove mounting frame - 1 - with air vents and rear ashtray or Rear A/C Control Head (Climatronic).

To disconnect the electrical harness connector on rear A/C control head (Climatronic), press locking button - 1 -, rotate retaining bracket in direction of arrow and disconnect connector.





- Disconnect electrical harness connectors - 1 to 4 -.





- Remove nuts - arrows - for rear center console.





Vehicles with split center armrest





- Fold center armrests upward.

- Pull off backrest hinge cover upward - arrow -.

- Remove bolts - arrows -.





- Disconnect electrical harness connectors for storage compartment light in center armrest.

- Pull center armrests upward and remove.

Vehicles with one-piece center armrest

- Fold center armrest upward.

Procedure for all vehicles





- Pry storage compartment at forward corners out of center console - arrow 1 - using Trim Removal Wedge (3409) and pull storage compartment forward - arrow 2 -.

- Disconnect electrical harness connectors - 1 - and - 2 - and remove storage compartment.





- Disconnect electrical harness connectors - 1 -.





- Unscrew bolts - arrows - on both sides of center console.

- Remove the front ashtray insert - 1 - by pressing the knob - arrow -.





- Unscrew bolt - arrow - and remove front ashtray housing.





- Disconnect electrical connector.

- Remove the center console selector trim upward - arrows -.





- Disconnect electrical connectors.

- Remove the bolts - 2 -.





- Release retaining springs - 1 - using a small screwdriver - arrow -.

- Swivel Climatronic Control Module (J255) at top edge toward rear.

- Remove Climatronic Control Module from mount.

- Disconnect the electrical connectors - A through E - by releasing the catches - G -.





- Disconnect electrical harness connector - F -.

- Remove bolts - arrows -.





- Press on the rocker - A - of selector lever emergency release using e.g. a screwdriver.





- At the same time, shift selector lever out of position "P" into position "D".

- Turn the sleeve - 1 - to the left and slide it down as far as the stop.





- Remove selector lever knob - 2 - upward.

- Release retaining hooks - 1 - on both sides of selector mechanism - arrow - and raise cover - 3 - upward.





- Disconnect electrical harness connector - 2 - and remove cover.

- Lift rear center console and disconnect electrical harness connectors on underside of center console.

- Remove center console toward rear.

- Remove screws - 3 - and - 5 - with Special Screwdriver T8 (T40056 A).





- Remove TORX bolts - 6 - and hex socket bolt - 4 -.

- Disconnect upper steering column switch trim - 2 - from lower trim - 1 - and remove both parts.

- Remove bolt - 2 -.





- Disconnect electrical connectors - 1 -, - 3 - and - 4 -.

- Carefully remove the steering column switch together with the steering column electronic systems control module.

- Turn knurled wheel - 3 - for left air vent next to instrument cluster completely upward.





- Insert one watchmaker's screwdriver each - 1 - into air vent retaining clamps above the lower ventilation fin - 2 -.

- Pull air vent alternating on left and right side out of the installation opening, watchmaker's screwdrivers must remain inserted while doing this.

Pull air vent out of installation opening using Hook (3438) if necessary.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector at air vent.

- Repeat the procedure on the right air outlet near the instrument cluster.

- Remove bolts - arrows -.





- Pull the instrument panel cover away from the instrument cluster slightly.

- Disconnect the electrical connectors on the instrument cluster cover.

- Release left and right retaining clamps - arrows - and pull out instrument cluster slightly from instrument panel.





- Press catch - 1 -, rotate retaining bracket in - direction of arrow - and remove connector to do so.





- Remove instrument cluster.

- Turn knurled wheel - 3 - for left air vent above glove compartment completely upward.





- Insert one watchmaker's screwdriver each - 1 - into air vent retaining clamps above the lower ventilation fin - 2 -.

- Pull air vent alternating on left and right side out of the installation opening, watchmaker's screwdrivers must remain inserted while doing this.

Pull air vent out of installation opening using Hook (3438) if necessary.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector at air vent.

- Repeat procedure at right air vent, above glove compartment.

- Release retaining tabs - 1 - of coin tray.





- Pull coin tray out of instrument panel - arrow -.

- Disconnect the rear electrical harness connector on coin tray.

- Remove heating channel in driver's side footwell.





- Disconnect electrical harness connectors - 1 -.

- Unclip harness connector - 5 - at relay and fuse carrier.

- Remove the bolts - 3 -.

- Disengage retaining pin - 4 - of relay and fuse carrier at the side guide - arrow -.

- Remove relay and fuse carrier - 2 - and set it down with electrical wires connected in the footwell.

- Remove bolts - 1 - of left fuse holder - 2 -.





- Release retaining tabs - arrows - and remove fuse holder from instrument panel central tube, electrical wires remain connected.

- Release securing clip - arrow 1 - on left CAN-connector.





- Push retaining tab - arrow 2 - and disconnect 46-Pin CAN Connector (T46a) inward, electrical wires remain connected.

- Secure steering column - 1 - with a cable tie - 2 - to prevent the upper and lower parts of steering column from separating inadvertently during removal.





If splines are no longer found in their original installation position, this may cause flapping noises while driving.

- Remove bolts - arrows - and set down steering column in footwell.

To disconnect electrical harness connector on headlamp range control module, press catch - 1 -, rotate retaining clip in - direction of arrow - and disconnect connector.





- Disconnect electrical harness connectors on headlamp range control module - 2 - and on warning buzzer for front parking aid system - 1 -.





- Remove bolts - arrows -.





- Remove Front Information Display Control Head Control Module (J523).

- Disconnect electrical connector - 1 -.

The connectors - item 2 - and - 3 - remain connected.

- Set down Front Information Display Control Head Control Module in footwell.

- Remove bolts - arrows -.





- Remove Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface (J533).

The connectors - item 1 - and - 2 - remain connected.

- Set down Data Bus On Board Diagnostic Interface in footwell.

- Remove bolts - 1 - of right fuse holder - 2 -.





- Release retaining tabs - arrows - and remove fuse holder from instrument panel central tube, electrical wires remain connected.

- Release securing clip - arrow 1 - on right CAN-connector.





- Push retaining tab - arrow 2 - and disconnect 46-Pin CAN Connector (T46b) inward, electrical wires remain connected.

- Disengage and disconnect electrical harness connector on front passenger's airbag - 2 - and on Right Center Vent Motor (V111) - 1 -.





- Unclip wiring harness from instrument panel using Pry Lever - RMV Outside Mirror (80-200) - arrows -.

- Unclip wiring harness from central tube for instrument panel.

- Unscrew bottom bolt - 2 - on instrument panel.





- Unscrew bolts - 1 - and - 4 - and remove supports for instrument panel central tube with backing plates - 3 -.

- Disconnect electrical harness connector on Left Center Vent Motor (V110) - 1 - and on Open-Close Display Motor (V301) - 2 -.





- Unscrew nuts - 1 - and - 2 - at left on central tube and remove backing plate - 3 -.





- Remove bolt - 4 -.

- Unscrew nuts - 1 - at right on central tube and remove backing plate - 3 -.





A second technician is required to remove the instrument panel central tube.

- Remove central tube - 3 - with instrument panel out of vehicle interior and set it down on a soft surface.

Installing

Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:

- Align instrument panel and tighten bolt/nuts.

- Bolt on steering column to central tube.

- Observe safety precautions after connecting the battery.
