Instructions For Changing/Installing Wheels

Instructions for changing/installing wheels

Special tools and equipment

^ T40004 Wheel lock key set

^ 3208 Suction holder
^ VAG 1332 Torque wrench

Note:
^ Raise the vehicle at the designated lifting points only.
^ Do not use a screwdriver to pry off trim caps on vehicles with light-alloy wheels. Only use the designated special tool (puller in vehicle tool kit or suction holder 3208).
^ To release the wheel bolts use socket attachments of the correct width across flats.
Worn out socket attachments must not be reused.
^ Do not use impact wrenches to release anti-theft wheel bolts (lockable wheel bolts).
^ Do not allow wheel bolts to become dirty.

CAUTION!
Firm seating of wheel bolts and wheels is only guaranteed if the checks/instructions below are followed.

These checks/instructions must be performed/observed on the removed wheel (rim).
- Check that the contact surfaces of the brake disc/brake drum and wheel (rim) are free of corrosion and dirt. Remove oil, grease and corrosion as necessary.
- Check that the centering holes of the wheel (rim) and the centering flange of the hub are free of corrosion and dirt. If necessary remove any oil, grease and corrosion and apply Wax Spray D 322 000 A2 to ensure corrosion protection.

Note:
The wax spray must not come into contact with brake system components.

- If rust or dirt drops between the brake disc and the wheel hub while disassembling, remove it using compressed air.

WARNING!
Wear protective goggles when working with compressed air.

- The wheel bolt seats (rims) and the wheel bolts must be free of dirt and corrosion.
- Dirty wheel bolt seats (rims) must be cleaned with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- Check that the wheel bolts and wheel hub threads are clean.
- Clean dirty wheel bolts in the area of the wheel bolt seat and thread, e.g. with a brass brush. Heavily corroded or damaged wheel bolts must be replaced.
- If slightly corroded wheel bolts are reused, the seat and thread areas must be cleaned and the sliding surfaces must be greased with Optimol TA paste G 052 109 A2 as follows:

- -Two-part wheel bolt, see illustration
^ Apply a thin coat of grease to thread area -1- and between screw head contact area -4- and recess ring -3-.
^ The recess contact surface -2- to the rim must not be greased.

Note:
Only Optimol TA paste G 052 109 A2 must be used. The paste must not come into contact with brake system components.

- Check whether the wheel bolts can be easily screwed in by hand without using a tool. The wheel bolts must screw in easily over the entire length of the thread when installing wheels.
- Make sure that the hole of the brake disc aligns with the thread of the hub. The thread of the wheel bolts must not contact the brake disc hole.

Wheel installing
- Install the wheel on the wheel hub and secure it manually with two opposite wheel bolts.
- Screw the remaining wheel bolts in by hand; the wheel bolts must screw in easily. Check for accurate centering.
- Take the load off the wheel, by raising slightly, if necessary, and tighten two wheel bolts slightly by hand.
- - When installing wheels, screw in all the wheel bolts evenly by hand.
- Tighten the wheel bolts, e.g. using a lug wrench, in a diagonal sequence to approx. 50 Nm.
- Lower the vehicle onto the ground and tighten all the wheel bolts to the specified tightening torque in a diagonal sequence.
