Grease filling of drive axle joints (drive axle with triple roller joint):





Regrease joint when replacing CV boot.

^ Use plastic hammer to pound joint onto shaft until snap ring snaps in.

^ To equalize pressure, briefly lift boot before tightening clamps

Tightening clamp on inner joint





Removing outer CV joint from drive axle
- Clamp drive axle in vise using jaw protectors.
- Remove large clamp and pull back CV boot.
- Using a hammer and a copper or brass drift, drive off inner ring of constant velocity joint.





Ventilating CV joint boot
Only applies to rubber CV boots

Note:
^ Installing the C V boot can create a vacuum in the joint. This vacuum pulls a fold inward when the vehicle is driven - arrow -. Therefore, before tightening the clamp, raise the edge of the boot to allow the pressure to equalize.

Items 1, 2 and 3 are not installed on all versions

Instructions apply only to stainless steel clamps.





Tightening clamp on outer joint
- Apply CV joint boot clamp tool V.A.G 1682 as shown. Make sure jaws of tool make contact with lugs - arrows B - on clamp.
- Tighten clamp by turning spindle with torque wrench (take care to keep pliers straight).

^ Tightening torque: 20 Nm.
^ Use torque wrench with 5 to 50 Nm range (e.g. torque wrench V.A.G 1331).
^ Make sure spindle thread on pliers moves freely. Lubricate with MoS2 grease if necessary.
^ If the thread is stiff (e.g. due to dirt), the required clamping force will not be attained at the clamp when applying specified tightening torque.
