Steering Gear



Power steering gear, assembly overview
The illustration applies to 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines.

The power steering gear is removed and installed complete with tie rods.





1 - Power steering gear with tie rods

2 - Combi bolt, 40 Nm plus an additional 90° 1/4 turn
^ Always replace

3 - Bolt, 30 Nm

4 - Steering column

5 - Rubber boot in bulkhead
^ Check for tears and chafing
^ Note correct installation position

6 - Combi bolt, 40 Nm plus an additional 90° 1/4 turn
^ Always replace

7 - Hex bolt

8 - Bolt

9 - Self-locking nut

10 - Hub carrier (steering arm)

11 - Banjo bolt, 47 Nm

12 - Oil seal
^ Always replace

13 - Return hose

14 - Return hose connection, 40 Nm
^ Colored markings must line up

15 - Oil seal
^ Always replace

16 - Socket head bolt, 22 Nm
^ Threaded plug

17 - Oil seal
^ Always replace

18 - Expansion hose

19 - Oil seal
^ Always replace

20 - Banjo bolt with non-return valve, 35 Nm

21 - Expansion hose
^ For 4-cyl. engines

22 - Expansion hose
^ For 6-cyl. engines

23 - Tie rod

24 - Tie rod ball joint





Set steering to center position:

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Torque wrench V.A.G. 1331
^ Steering centering bolt VAS 6224

Steering gear (sectional drawing)
1 - Plug, 22 Nm
2 - Screw in steering centering bolt VAS 6224 as far as possible by hand.
3 - Steering rack
4 - Steering gear housing

- Move steering wheel slightly to left and right of center position.
- Have a second mechanic screw steering centering bolt VAS 6224 into steering gear until it is felt to engage in the centering hole.
