Wheel Bearing Housing With Bolted Wheel Bearing, Servicing



Wheel bearing housing with wheel bearing pressed in, repairing

1 - Wheel bearing housing

2 - Countersunk bolts
^ 80 Nm plus an additional 90° 1/4 turn

3 - Bushings

4 - Ball bearing
^ Pressing out (82 mm diameter)
^ Pressing in (82 mm diameter)
^ Pressing off inner race
^ Installation position:
^ Larger internal diameter of wheel bearing faces wheel hub

5 - Wheel hub
^ Pressing out
^ Pulling off inner race
^ Stepped version
^ Contact surface between wheel hub/brake disc and tapped holes must be free from paint and dirt

Removing
- Remove wheel trim; pull trim cap off light-alloy wheels, (using puller in vehicle tool kit).

CAUTION!
Remove hex bolt securing drive axle (loosen only when vehicle is standing on wheels - risk of accident).


- Remove wheel.
- Secure brake disc with wheel bolt.
- Remove ABS speed sensor wiring from bracket on wheel bearing housing.

Vehicles with HP-2 brake caliper





- Remove hex bolt - 2 - and detach brake line bracket.
- Remove bolts - 1 - for brake caliper and remove brake caliper.
- Re-attach brake line bracket. Insert hex bolt - 2 - and tighten.
- Fasten brake caliper to the body so that the weight of the brake caliper does not bend or damage brake line.

Continued for all vehicles
- Detach brake caliper and fasten to body so that weight of brake caliper does not bend or damage brake hose or brake line.





- Remove bolt - 5 - for ABS speed sensor.
- Remove brake disc.





- Remove bolts - arrows -.
- Remove splash plate.





- Loosen nut - 1 -, remove hex bolt and pull out both upper links - 2 - upward.

Never widen slots in wheel bearing housing using a chisel or the like.
- Swing wheel bearing housing aside in direction of arrow, and at the same time pull end of drive axle out of wheel hub.
- Fasten drive axle to body with wire or similar.





- Remove countersunk bolts - 1 -.
- Remove wheel bearing unit.





Pressing wheel hub (82 mm diameter) out of wheel bearing housing





Pressing inner bearing race off wheel hub.
- Install splitter (e.g. Kukko 15-17) into annular groove - arrow - on inner bearing race and tighten spindle.





- Press inner bearing race off wheel hub.

- When pressing in thrust pad VW 511 must only rest on inner race.

Installing
- Insert wheel bearing unit in wheel bearing housing.





- Install and tighten countersunk bolts - 1 -.
- Slide drive axle outer joint into wheel hub and tighten new hex bolt hand-tight.

Note:
^ Remove any remaining adhesive on thread of outer joint pin.





- Install both upper links joint pins in wheel bearing housing, by pressing down as far as possible by clamping using special tool T40067.





- Install and tighten new bolt - 1 - and self-locking nut.
- Install ABS speed sensor.
- Install and secure brake disc.
- Install wheels and tighten.

CAUTION!
Tighten hex bolt for drive axle (only when vehicle is standing on its wheels - risk of accident-).


- Perform wheel alignment.

Wheel alignment must be performed on wheel alignment equipment recommended by VW/Audi.
