Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 24 number 09-16 dated August 7, 2009 for reasons listed below.

Affected Vehicles

Condition

^ MIL on.

^ Engine has low performance without significant loss of power or stalling.

Technical Background

DTCs related to the Mass Air Flow Sensor and fuel trim faults can be related to (but not limited to) the following conditions:

^ False intake air, or air filter element very dirty.

^ Fuel pressure too low.

^ Mass Air Flow Sensor fault. Possible fault entries associated with this condition:

^ DTC 16485 (P0101 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance).

^ DTC 16486 (P0102 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circ. Low Input).

^ DTC 16487 (P0103 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circ. High Input).

^ DTC 16496 (P0112 Intake Air Temp.Circ. Low Input).

^ DTC 16497 (P0113 Intake Air Temp.Circ. High Input).

Production Solution

No measures necessary.

Service

1. Ensure one of the previously listed DTCs are logged. Verify this using the GFF test.

^ A replacement of the Mass Air Flow Sensor-G70 is only permitted if one of the above fault entries is logged and verified using the GFF test.

^ If there is no fault entry for the Mass Air Flow Sensor, carry out the following checks and GFF tests related to the DTCs in ECM fault memory.

2. Check air filter installation. The air filter must be the factory air filter element that is clean, dry and properly seated in the air box assembly.

3. Check fuel pressure per procedure in ElsaWeb.

^ With too high fuel pressure, the mixture adaptation value is smaller than normal.

^ With too low fuel pressure, the mixture adaptation value is larger than normal.

4. Check the mixture adaptation values in the measured value block of the engine control unit 032 (idle speed: values 1+3 / part load: values 2+4).

^ Values 1+3 should be +/- 2.5% and values 2+4 +/-10%.

5. Check the intake system for false air with leak detection spray G 001 800 A1.

The leak detection spray is drawn in with false air through vacuum into the intake system. The leak detection spray reduces the ignitability of the air/fuel mixture. This leads to a drop in engine RPM and a change in oxygen sensor values.

With false intake air, the actual lambda value MVB 031/ value 1+3 goes up and the lambda control value MVB 033 / value 1+3 goes down.
