Clutch System, Bleeding

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Brake Filler/Bleeder Unit (VAS 5234)

Specification of brake fluid, refer to => Brakes and Traction Control Brakes and Traction Control

Procedure

After working on the hydraulic clutch mechanism, the system must be bled.

Before bleeding, you must bring clutch pedal back to rest position and fill brake fluid reservoir to "max" mark with brake fluid.

First open bleeder valve, before switching on brake filler/bleeder unit.

For the following work step, make sure no brake fluid leaks onto transmission.

Perform clutch system bleeding in intervals with brake system bleeding.

- Connect Brake Filler/Bleeder Unit (VAS 5234) but do not switch on yet.

- Remove rear noise insulation - 2 to 3 - if equipped.





Vehicles with 6 and 8-cylinder engine.

- If equipped, remove noise insulation cover - arrows - in left wheel housing.





- Remove left drive axle heat shield - arrows -.





Continued for all vehicles

- Connect bleeder hose - A - to clutch slave cylinder - arrow - and open bleeder valve.





- Connect bleeder hose with collector bottle vacuum hose.

- Now switch on brake filler/bleeder unit and bleed approximately 100 cm3 of brake fluid.

Working pressure 2.5 bar

Ensure correct bleeder hose seating during bleeding process.

- Close bleeder valve with 4.5 Nm.

- Depress clutch pedal several times after completion of bleeding process.

- Bleed system again if necessary.

- Attach drive axle heat shield to the transmission, if equipped.

Tightening Specifications
