Flange/Drive Shaft Seal, Rear Final Drive Installed

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A ) with universal transmission support (V.A.G 1359/2 )





Puller (VW 391)





Seal driver-front wheel bearing (3143)





Pulling hook (T20143)





Driver (T40109)

Sealing grease (G 052 128 A1)

2 hex bolts M 8 x 30

Removing

Rear final drive installed

Observe general repair notes => [ General Repair Information ] Rear Final Drive 0AR (02XA,0A3A,09EA,09LA Transmission).

- Remove rear part of exhaust system from clamping sleeves - arrows -.





- Disconnect driveshaft from rear final drive and tie up => [ Driveshaft, Disconnecting from Rear Final Drive ] Driveshaft, Disconnecting From Rear Final Drive.

- Place Engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A ) with universal transmission support (V.A.G 1359/2 ) under rear final drive.





- Remove securing bolts from transmission support - arrows -.





- Lower final drive carefully until flange/driveshaft is accessible.

- Remove circlip - arrow -.





CAUTION!
If circlip is over-stretched or damaged, it must be replaced by a new circlip of the same thickness.

- Install 2 hex bolts M 8 x 30 - arrow - in flange.

- Place drip tray underneath.

- Pull off drive shaft flange using puller (VW 391 ).





- Carefully push oil seal on top, outer circumference - arrow - slightly inward.





- Then pry out obliquely set oil seal.





CAUTION!
Make sure that contact surface for shaft oil seal is not damaged on the drive pinion.

Installing

Installation is in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

- Coat outer edge of gasket with axle oil.

- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing grease (G 052 128 A1).

- Drive in new seal to stop, without canting seal.





- Heat flange/driveshaft to a maximum of 80°.

CAUTION!
Wear protective gloves

- Drive on flange/driveshaft far enough until circlip can be installed.





- Install circlip - arrow -.





- Tighten securing bolts of transmission support - arrows -.





Tightening torque on Audi A4 and Cabriolet, Audi A6 => [ (Item 13) Hex socket head bolt, 40 Nm ] Rear Final Drive Assembly Overview

Tightening torque on Audi A8 => [ (Item 11) Hex socket head bolts, 40 Nm plus an additional 90° (/ turn). ] Rear Final Drive Overview and => [ (Item 12) Hex socket head bolts, 40 Nm plus an additional 90° (/ turn). ] Rear Final Drive Overview

- Then install driveshaft to rear final drive => [ Driveshaft, securing to rear
final drive ] Driveshaft, Disconnecting From Rear Final Drive.

- Axle oil in rear final drive, checking => [ Rear Final Drive Axle Oil, Checking ] Rear Final Drive 0AR (02XA,0A3A,09EA,09LA Transmission).

- Install rear part of exhaust system.
