December 17, 2008.

Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 91 number 08-24 dated June 24, 2008 for reasons listed below.

Affected vehicles

91 Navigation plus (RNS-E): Portion of DVD not readable, circular scratches

Condition

- The navigation system has reduced functionality.

- A DVD reading error may be displayed on the screen.

- When the navigation DVD is ejected, there is a visible circular scratch on the reading side (bottom) of the DVD. The scratch is on the DVD's outer rim.

Technical Background

Figure 1:

Under certain conditions, the drive mechanism may contact the DVD which is damaged as a result.

Production Solution

Drive mechanism improvements are under development.

Service

Test the drive mechanism by inserting a blank CD. When a DVD or CD is inserted, the Table of Contents (TOC) data on the inner-most track is read first.

Inserting the test CD several times should be sufficient to reproduce the problem. In most cases, the initial damage can be detected after the first time the blank CD has been inserted. This test can be performed any number of times.

- If circular scratches can be seen on the blank (test) CD, both the navigation unit and the DVD need to be replaced.

- If there is no damage to the blank (test) CD, only the DVD should be replaced.

Warranty

When procedure applies to vehicles under warranty, use the table.
