20 Fuel tank removed from vehicle, neutralizing fuel
Condition
A fuel tank has been removed from a vehicle and must be neutralized.
Technical Background
When a vehicle's fuel tank is replaced, the original tank must be flushed to properly neutralize the remaining gasoline or diesel fuel.
This procedure pertains to any fuel tank, whether being returned to the Warranty Parts Receiving Center or being disposed of by other means.

Service
Warning:
The fuel tank must be neutralized before shipment or disposal.
Flushing / Neutralizing
1. Fuel tank must be removed.
2. Pour 0.5 liter of emulsifier (Part No. D 200 201L) into tank.
3. Add 4 liters water.
4. Cap all openings.
5. Agitate tank for at least 30 seconds, turning tank assembly in all directions to allow emulsifier to reach all areas inside the tank.
6. After agitation, drain neutralized mixture into special container labeled "Waste Material-Hazardous" and dispose of properly in accordance with local, state and Federal EPA regulations.
Warranty
When procedure applies to vehicles under warranty, use the following:
- There is no labor reimbursement for neutralizing fuel tanks.
- Add 0.5 liter of the D 200 201L cleaning agent to the warranty claim.
All warranty claims submitted for payment must be in accordance with the Audi Warranty Policies and Procedures Manual. Claims are subject to review or audit by Audi Warranty.
