August 3, 2012.

Affected Vehicles

Condition
Mooing noises from gearbox when pulling away or when driving and turning left.

Technical Background
Because of a reduction of the gear oil quality, over time the thrust washers of the differential gears can cause the mooing noises.

Production Solution
Not applicable.

Service

Check the oil level and the oil quality (metal debris, discoloring, and dirt). Perform the following steps only, if the gear oil does not indicate gearbox damage.

1. Warm up the gear oil in a sufficiently long test drive.

2. Drain the hot and thin gear oil straight away.

Warning

3. Fit the drain plug and fill with fresh gear oil according to the repair manual.
