Affected Vehicles
Condition
MIL light on/irregular engine performance.
Technical Background
The air filter change intervals are provided for vehicles operated in normal conditions. In unusual driving situations, for example, driving on dusty roads or on race circuits, the air filter can get dirty quicker than normal. Because of the position of the air intake close to the ground behind the front wheel, a larger amount of dirt can get into the intake air in extreme situations (dust/race circuit).
On the R8, a clogged air filter can lead to MIL light, misfiring, and fuel trim related DTCs.
Because of the dirty air filter, not enough intake air is available for the engine. The resulting excessive vacuum in the air duct hose between air filter and throttle valve can collapse and damage the air duct hose.
Repeated deformation of the hose can damage it.
Bypass air then gets in via a crack in the intake hose and can cause the MIL light to come on and fuel trim related DTCs.
Production Solution
Not Applicable.
Service
1. Check for cracks/damage on both intake air hoses.
2. If either hose is damaged, replace both hoses and both air cleaner elements.
