SUBJECT: Charcoal Canister and Purge Valve for Evaporative Emission Control System

MODELS: 325i/325iC (produced in December 1986)

Condition: Car may develop hard starting and/or rough idle in high ambient temperatures (refer also to S.I. 13 03 87 (1351).

Cause: Continuous purging of evaporative vapors from charcoal canister due to the possibility of loose charcoal particles also being purged from the canister. These particles might jam the purge valve and keep it open continuously.

Condition: Some of the charcoal canisters from the initial factory supply may have loose charcoal particles in the upper space between the sealing felt and the purge line fitting. This condition was detected early at the factory and the vast majority of charcoal canisters was exchanged before vehicle delivery to the dealership.

However, some vehicles were delivered to the dealers with the original charcoal canister still installed.

NOTE: The proper charcoal canister has a white dot next to the production stamp.

B) For cars which have been delivered to customers (During the customer's next visit to the Service Department)
1) Check if a charcoal canister with a white dot is installed.
- If YES, do not proceed any further.
- If NO, replace charcoal canister by one marked with a white dot.

2) Check the function of the purge valve on those cars where the charcoal canister had to be replaced:
- Detach hoses and plug from purge valve.
- Remove purge valve from engine.
- Attach vacuum pump hose of BMW Service Tester to 8 mm fitting of purge valve
- Supply 12 volts to purge valve being closed (do not reconnect original plug for voltage supply).
- Set BMW Service Tester to Multimeter Program 21.
- Switch on vacuum pump.
- Adjust vacuum pump of BMW Service Tester to 600 +/- 100 mbar.
- Let vacuum pump run for 10 seconds, then switch off vacuum pump.
- After another 20 seconds, read the vacuum drop:
^ If the vacuum drop is smaller than 50 mbar, the purge valve does not have to be replaced.
^ If the vacuum drop is greater than 50 mbar, the purge valve has to be replaced.
- Install purge valve and connect plug and hoses properly.

C) Cars with symptoms of hard starting and/or rough idle in high ambient temperatures. Follow procedure as outlined under "B".
