SUBJECT:
Brake Light Switch - Recall Campaign No. 96V-111

MODEL:
3 Series (E36), 5 Series (E34), 7 Series (E32)

Situation:

BMW of North America, Inc. has voluntarily initiated a safety-related defect recall campaign. The NHTSA-assigned Recall Campaign number is 96V-111.

This Service Information bulletin outlines specific procedures for the implementation of the campaign. A copy of the customer letter is enclosed for your information.

Description of Defect:

Depending on the duration and frequency of brake application, the brake light switch in affected vehicles could internally overheat due to electrical current flow. Switch overheating could cause distortion of the plastic internal components in the area of the electrical contacts. If this were to occur, the switch could jam either in the open (brake lights off) position or in the closed (brake lights on) position. If this happens, the brake lights will either not operate or will be continuously illuminated, regardless of brake pedal position.

Vehicles Affected:

Series Engines/Models Production Range

7 (E32) M30, M60 1/90 through 3/94
7 (E32) M70 1/90 through 4/92
5 (E34) M30, M60 1/90 through 3/94
5 (E34) M50 1/90 through 10/93
3 (E36) 325i/iA/is/isA, M3 10/90 through 3/94

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

Note:
If a customer presents the Customer Notification Letter (for that Chassis Number) it is not necessary to inquire on DCS. Perform the required inspection and/or repair.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
