Procedure
** Procedure:In general the EPROM does not need to be removed. It will only need to be updated.
^ Prior to starting the programming update, check and correct DME faults if any are found. Once all faults have been corrected and cleared the update can be performed.
NOTE:
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO START THE ENGINE AND LET IT IDLE FOR AT LEAST 1 MINUTE IMMEDIATELY AFTER COMPLETING THE PROGRAMMING UPDATE. BY ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO SIT WITH ONLY THE IGNITION SWITCHED ON. DAMAGE TO THE DME FINAL STAGE MAY RESULT.
^ At no time during the update procedure should the ignition be turned off, control unit disconnected or MoDiC removed.
^ A programming update can only be performed once. If the update has already been completed the MoDiC will display the screens:
Note:
It is no longer necessary to place a new label on the cover of the DME control module after completing the programming update. A label is only required if the EPROM is replaces.
The following steps should be followed in order to correctly update the EPROM using MoDiC V5.1 or higher.
1. Connect MoDiC.
2. Turn ignition switch to ON.
3. Select "Programming."
4. Enter Date.
5. Select "3. DME programming."
6. Select "1. Determine data update measures."
7. Answer Y to "Start automatic determination of aftersales service measures?"
8. Verify the chassis number of the vehicle. If the number is not correct enter the correct chassis number and the part number for a programmed control module.
- The part number for a programmed control module can be obtained from the BMW label located on the cover of the currently installed DME (as indicated), or from the DME Identification screen as the apart Number."
9. Answer Y to "Start automatic data update? Y/N"
10. Enter odometer reading.
11. Once programming is complete: start engine and allow to idle for a least 1 minute.
12. Verify proper engine operation.
13. Check fault memory, no faults should be set.
Disconnect MoDiC, print out new label and attach to repair order. It is no longer necessary to attach a new label to the currently installed DME module.
Hint:
If a stick-on label is not required, the back of a MoDiC label or an index card can be used to print out reference data.
Note:
See attachment for additional DME EPROM reprogramming and troubleshooting procedures if a problem occurs during the determination, programming or engine start-up phase of this Service Action.
Aftermarket EPROMs:
If during the course of replacing the EPROM you find an aftermarket EPROM in the original DME:
1. Contact the customer and advise them that BMW recommends that such an EPROM be removed and replaced by a BMW-approved EPROM and software.
2. If the customer insists on keeping the non-approved EPROM installed, advise them that this may cause nonconformance with environmental emission laws and regulations, plus it may affect warranty coverage on their vehicle.
After you advise the customer of these considerations and they insist on keeping the aftermarket EPROM installed:
1. Abort the Service Action.
2. On the repair order note that the customer insisted on keeping the aftermarket EPROM installed and does not wish to have the Service Action performed.
3. Upon pickup of the car, ask the customer to sign a statement indicating that he or she refused to have the Service Action performed.
4. Keep a copy of the repair order in the service file for that vehicle.
5. Reimbursement for time spent on the vehicle can be obtained if you:
^ Utilize the DCS claim appeal.
^ Submit a legible copy of the repair order indicating that the customer refused to have the BMW EPROM installed.
BMW NA will issue a claim credit in the amount of 4 flat rate units, referencing the repair order submitted.
If the customer agrees to have the Service Action performed and the DME EPROM replaced with a BMW-approved EPROM and software, you should:
1. Make a notation on the repair order that the aftermarket EPROM was returned to the customer.
2. Upon pickup of the car, ask the customer to sign a statement indicating that the aftermarket EPROM was returned.
3. Return the aftermarket EPROM to the customer in a suitable container.
