Disassembly/Assembly

DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY


Remove steering column.



Pull off plug.






Compress locking hooks and pull off the switch.



Press down on locking hook with a screwdriver and take oft the starter switch.






Remove harness holder and relay socket.


Compress and pull out the horn contact.






Installation:
Lubricate lightly with grease in area of the spring.




Turn the Ignition key to "R", press 1.2mm (0.047") dia. wire into the bore and pull out the lock cylinder.






Lift out snap ring (1).






Take off washer (2), spring (3) and support (4).


Installation:
Stem of support (4) faces the bearing.



Installation:






Place snap ring (1) on Special Tool 32 3 052 and mount (knock from a
hammer) with Special Tool 32 3 051. Counterhold on the steering spindle.



Remove shear-off screw with help of a chisel or similar tool.






Pull off the steering lock. if necessary, knock out the bearing.


Installation:






Slide steering lock on to outer pipe. Tighten Torx screws up to sheer-off point.

Lower Steering Spindle Bearing:






Lift out snap ring (1) and takeoff collar (2) with support (3). If necessary, knock out the bearing.

Installation.
Stem of support (3) faces the bearing. Install snap ring with Special Tools 32 3 051/052.


Bend open lockplates (5)






Unscrew bolts (1...3) Bolt (1) = left-hand threads

Assembling Procedures (Note Order):

1. Screw in left-hand thread MBx22 bolt (1) with lockplate (5) tightening torque = 12 Nm (8.7 ft. lbs.).
Check for 2 + 1 mm (0.079 ± 0.039") spacing of lever to clamp.

2. Screw in M8x22 bolt (2) with lockplate (5) and nut (4) - tightening torque = 8 Nm (6 ft. lbs.).

3. Tighten nut (4) - tightening torque 7 Nm (5 ft. lbs.).

4. Tighten hexagon nut (3) with lever (6) in "CLOSED" position. Tightening torque = 12 Nm (8.7 ft. lbs.).

5. Bend lockplate (5).
