Removing and Installing Transmission

Removing and Installing Transmission




- Disconnect battery ground lead.
- Unscrew nut (1).
- Disconnect throttle cable.
Installation:
- Adjust throttle cable. Adjustments




IMPORTANT!
Only BMW 750i with M 70 engine:
The engine must be supported with Special Tool 00 0 200 prior to lowering the transmission, to avoid damaging the heater pipe connections on the engine compartment wait (danger of leakage).
- Remove coolant expansion tank and cover.
- Set up and attach Special Tool 00 0 200 in the rear eye.
- Tension the chain.




- Remove exhaust assembly.
- Remove heat shield (1).




- Support transmission with Special Tools 24 0 120 and 00 2 020.
BMW 750i with 4-HP-24 Transmission:
- Use Special Tool 24 0 130.
Note:
- It might be necessary to slightly deform the oxygen sensor plug holder when applying Special Tool 24 0 130.
- Remove cross member (2).
Installation:
Center transmission.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications




- Unscrew propeller shaft on transmission.
Installation:
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications




- Unscrew center mount.
Installation:
- Preload center mount forward by distance A 2 to 4 mm (0.079 to 0.157").
IMPORTANT!
- Don't let the propeller shaft fall Into the joints - suspend from car on a piece of wire.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications




- Drain oil.
IMPORTANT!
- Never reuse drained oil.
Installation:
The transmission will have to be disassembled, If the oil smells burnt and is pitch black.
IMPORTANT!
- Clean oil cooler and pipes with air pressure and flush twice with ATF, if the transmission was faulty
- Remove oil filler pipe (1). Unscrew oil cooler pipes on transmission.
Installation:
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications




IMPORTANT! - Installation:
- Check O-rings (1).
- Check condition of O-rings, replacing if necessary.




- Unscrew nut (2) counterhold.
- Disconnect cable on holder.
- Pull Out cable.
Installation:
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
- Adjust shift. Adjustments




Only Cars with EH Transmission:
- Turn bayonet fastener (1) counter-clockwise.
- Pull off plug (2).
- Lift wins harness out of holders.
Installation:
- Connect plug (2) in such a manner that the marking lines are aligned.




- Lift out cover on opening (1) of oil pan.
- Unscrew torque converter on drive plate at three points with Special Tool 24 1 110.
- Turn the flywheel for this purpose.




Installation:
- Screw in bolt with Special Tool 24 1 110 and tighten with a torque wrench.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
IMPORTANT!
- Only use size M 10 x 16 mm bolts together with spring washers.
- Nonconformance could lead to destruction of the transmission.




BMW 7501:
- Unscrew vibration damper (1) on the transmission.




- Take plug for oxygen sensor out of the holder, turning end rings (2) counterclockwise for this purpose.
Installation:
- Engage plug in opening of the holder.




- Lower the transmission as far as possible and unscrew it on the engine.
IMPORTANT!
BMW 750i with M 70 Engine:
- Lower engine with spindle of Special Tool 00 0 200 far enough, that there is a distance of about 1 mm (0.039") between the engine and rear heater pipe connection (1) check visually.




- Unscrew Torx bolts with a Torx socket.
IMPORTANT! - installation:
- Use washers on version with Torx bolts to avoid increasing the breaking loose torque.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications




- Pull transmission off of the engine, pressing off the torque converter at the same time.
Caution!
Special tool Jack with mounted trans mission may be moved only In completely lowered position.




IMPORTANT! - Installation:
- Check installed position of torque converter.
- Drive ring must be below edges of case.
Note:
- Make sure that converter remains in Its installed position while assembling; prevent it from sliding Out If necessary.




Installation:
- Check drive plate for breaks and cracks, replacing If necessary.
M 30 Engine:
- Hold flywheel with Special Tool 11 2 160.
- Unscrew expansion bolts.




M 70 Engine:
- Hold flywheel with Special Tool 11 2 070.
IMPORTANT!
- Replace and Install new expansion bolts with a bolt cement.
- Only coat threads.
- Clean tapped bores thoroughly.
- Tightening torque: Mechanical Specifications
