Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

A potentiometer provides the throttle position input to the ECM. Throttle position and rate are detected from the potentiometer. The sensor receives its supply voltage from the ECM. As the throttle is opened or closed, a varying voltage input signal is produced that represents the throttle position angle.

If a malfunction occurs, relative throttle position is determined from the RPM and air mass sensor inputs (FAIL-SAFE) and the fault is stored in memory.
