Complaint B

Complaint B:
Sporadically, no keys will operate the starter.

Cause B:
The following causes are possible:

^ The power supply for the Send/Receive (S/E) Module (Pin 2 = KI. R; Pin 3 = KI. 31) and/or the EWS Control Module (Pin 5 = KI. 30; Pin 7 = KI. 31) is interrupted.

The coil ends (1) of the ring antenna could be short-circuited to the conductive rubber ring (2) located near the connector.

^ The Send/Receive Module (S/E Module) could be disturbing data communication between the transponder in the key and the EWS II Control Module, due to component tolerances.

^ The Range Selector Switch (A) (Automatic Transmission), the General Module/Central Locking Module (B), the Anti-Theft (DWA) Control Module (B), and/or the On-Board Computer (C) are faulty and do not release the Starter Relay in the EWS Control Module.

Correction B:

1. Check the fuses for KI. R and KI. 30 of the EWS Control Module and replace if necessary. If found to be failed through overcurrent, identify and correct the cause of the failure.

2. If the vehicle was produced prior to December 1995, carefully remove the ring antenna clipped onto the ignition lock, replace the rubber ring (2) (P/N 32 32 1 094 182) on the ignition lock, and reinstal the ignition lock. Also replace the Send/Receive (S/E) Module if the vehicle was produced prior to December 1995.

Note:
The non-conductive rubber ring has been installed in series production since mid-November 1995.

The old rubber rings (P/N 32 311 092 850) must not be used. Inventory in the Parts Distribution Centers has been cleared of the older part number.

3. Using the DIS Tester in "expert mode", check whether the signals to the EWS II Control Module are plausible. If, for example, "Car immobilization system active" is displayed even though the vehicle is not double-locked, the General Module or Central Locking Module is outputting a false signal to Pin 8 of the EWS II Control Module. In this example, replace the General Module/Central Locking Module. Also check all other inputs for correct recognition (Range Selector Switch: Park/Neutral Signal; DWA/BC: Drive-Away Protection Signal).
