NOTE:
ALL SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETINS CONCERNING THE CENTRAL CODING KEY (ZCS) WILL BE FOUND IN THE GROUP 61 (ELECTRICAL) SECTION.
SUBJECT:
Coding Program "ZCS V 14.0" - Coding Not Possible
MODELS:
3 Series (E36) - 318i, 318iA
Situation:
Coding is not possible using Coding Program "ZCS V 14.0" when replacing a control module which requires coding, as follows:
^ Drive-Away Protection Control Module (EWS II)
^ Supplemental Restraint System Control Module (ZAE)
^ Integrated Climate Regulation Control Module (IHKR E36)
^ Instrument Cluster
^ Body Electronics Control Module (GM)
Cause:
The vehicle may have been incorrectly equipped with a Central Coding Key (ZCS) that contains a prohibited variant combination. This variant combination (display of Check Control and On-Board Computer text in GB-English) has no technical effect on any function in the vehicle.
The coding Program "ZCS V 14.0" recognizes this fault, however, and cannot perform the coding. The message "No coding data available for this coding code" is displayed.
The faulty part of the central coding key is the "GM-line." The incorrect GM-line contains the number "3" as the next-to-last character (for example, 15B3 003 C).
The correct number would be a "0" at this position.
Vehicles Affected:
318i and 318iA vehicles produced in Spartanburg through 8/95.
Correction:
If one of the above-mentioned control modules must be replaced in an affected vehicle and coding is not possible using Coding Program "ZCS V 14.0," proceed as follows:
^ Recode the Instrument Cluster with the corrected central coding key, as follows:
Model Correct ZCS
318i 15A300006
318iA 15B300009
^ Code the replaced control module.
^ Print out a new central coding key label, affix it next to the old label, and mark through the old label with a black marker.
