Roll Bar: Description and Operation

NOTES ON ROLLOVER PROTECTION SYSTEM (RPS):

Design of Passive Rollover Protection System (RPS):

Components:
- Two independent (identical) cassettes (2), each with a retractable protective bracket.
- Two actuators (one in each cassette).
- A rollover sensor (3), mounted outside on the left cassette.
- A convertible top module (CVM) installed behind the left side panel trim.

The cassettes are pushed into the shafts provided in front of the partition wall (1) and bolted on.

Function of rollover protection system (RPS):
- Up to 9/97 the (RPS) can be diagnosed via the convertible top module (CVM).
- From 9/97 the (RPS) can be diagnosed via the "rollover protection sensor II" control unit.
- The number of activations and faults will be stored in the convertible top module (CVM) or rollover protection sensor II.
- From terminal "R", the system is able to function.
- Once it has been switched on, the rollover sensor performs a self-test lasting 6 seconds (yellow telltale on dashboard lights up). If the telltale fails to go out after approx. 6 seconds, this means: fault in system. The fault will be stored permanently and can be read via diagnosis.
- After a power failure in the vehicle circuit the sensor is still able to activate the RPS for a further 10 seconds (approx.). The energy required for this is stored in the condensers attached to the rollover sensor. The accumulated energy is available no later than 20 seconds after terminal "R" has been switched on.
- To check the system, the RPS must be triggered at each service and no later than every 2 years in a specialist workshop (using the diagnosis interface).
- The total number of system activations is stored permanently and can be read out via diagnosis.
- After 249 activations, the mechanical section must be inspected for wear. The system is otherwise entirely maintenance-free.
- Simple retraction of protective bar by hand (also by customer) with special tool (in vehicle toolkit) for unlocking the detent pawl lock.

NOTE: The cover caps are not fitted until after the grill has been installed.

Installation of Rollover Cassettes in Vehicle:

- Both rollover cassettes are installed behind the rear bench seat. The rollover brackets are extended within 3/1Oths of a second if there is an imminent risk of rollover.

Construction of Rollover Protection Cassette:

Components:
(1) Cassette
(2) Rollover bar with protective bracket on top
(4) Guide groove
(5) Special plastic anti-friction bearing
(6) Compression springs
(7) Pawl detent mechanism
(8) Actuator (electromagnet)

CAUTION! The cassette must not be repaired (only replace completely).

Triggering the Rollover Bar:

Triggering:
1. Electromagnet (18) initiates.
2. Pressure rod (17) presses from below against release lever (11)~
3. Release lever (11) tilts over its mounting point and releases the pendulum support (12).
4. Pendulum support (12) and therefore also the rollover bar (2) is released and extends upwards.

Protection Bar Extended:

- When the two rollover protection bars are extended, all vehicle occupants - especially rear seat passengers - obtain additional protection to their safety belts if a vehicle rolls.

Locking the Rollover Bar in Place:

- To support impact forces, the rollover bars (2) mate with the pawl detents (15) ("saw-tooth profile").

Rollover Tangents:

Rollover tangents:

(A) Rollover tangent with rollover protection system
(B) Rollover tangent without rollover protection system

Retracting Rollover Bar:

Retraction:
1. Fit together special tool and screwdriver handle (from vehicle tool kit).
2. Pull out headrest in upwards direction.
3. Insert special tool firmly home in guide for paw! detent mechanism and secure, if necessary, slightly raising the roll-bar.
4. Slide rollover protection bracket so far in that special tool works loose.
5. Press protective bracket back down => protective bracket engages with pendulum support on spring-loaded release lever.
6. Reinstall headrest.
7. Also retract the second bracket.
