Engine Removal and Installation

REMOVING AND INSTALLING ENGINE

CAUTION
: Disconnecting the battery will cancel (clear) the memory of control units which have diagnostic trouble code capabilities. Be sure to interrogate all control units for possible diagnostic trouble codes prior to disconnecting the battery.
BMW anti-theft radios can be rendered useless by disconnecting the battery. Make sure you know the correct code before disconnecting the battery. See your owner's manual for more information.

- Disconnect battery negative pole.
- Lift engine hood into assembly position and remove firewall (air manifold).
- Unscrew and remove splash guard.
- Remove transmission.




- Drain coolant from engine block.

Installation Note: Replace seal, torque drain plug to 50 + 6 Nm (37 + 4.5 ft lbs)

- Remove fan cowl and radiator.
- Remove intake filter housing.




- Remove Fan.

CAUTION: Left-hand threads. Using special tool 11 5 030, brace against pulley and unfasten cap nut from water pump using special tool 11 5 040.




Installation Note: Tighten fan with special tool 11 5 040. Tightening torque = 40 - 50 Nm (30 - 37 ft lbs).

NOTE: When using special tool 11 5 040, 30 Nm (22 ft lbs) on the torque wrench scale are equivalent to a tightening torque of 40 Nm (30 ft lbs).

CAUTION: Left-hand threads.

- Brace pulley with special tool 11 5 050 (bracket) and unfasten cap nut from water pump with special tool 11 5 040.




- Disconnect coolant hoses on engine.




- Disconnect heater hoses at heater and heating valve.

Installation Note: Fill and bleed cooling system,





- Pull adapter out of brake booster.
- Disconnect Bowden cable for throttle valve actuation.
- Remove alternator drive belt.




- Unscrew power steering oil supply tank from left-hand engine carrier and tie back to one side.




- Unscrew power steering pump from engine and tie back to one side.

Note: Lines remain connected.

WARNING: Catch and dispose of fuel as it escapes.

- Unfasten fuel delivery and fuel return lines.
- Remove upper section of manifold, Service and Repair




- Remove cover.
- Unscrew ignition coils.




Ignition coil arrangement
(1) Cylinder No. 1
(2) Cylinder No. 2
(3) Cylinder No. 3
(4) Cylinder No. 4




- Remove plug connection on idle speed actuator.




- Pull off hose to filter for tank ventilation.
- Remove lower manifold support.




- Unfasten cable duct on lower section of manifold.




- Remove oil dipstick guide.

Installation Note: Check O-ring, replacing if necessary.




- Unscrew manifold lower section.

Installation Note:
- Replace seals.
- Note dowel sleeves (3) and (4).

- Unfasten engine section of wiring harness and place to one side with cable duct.

- Attach engine to special tool 11 0 000 (engine hoist).




Front and rear suspension arrangement




- Unfasten right ground wire.
- Unfasten left and right engine mounts.
- Lift out engine.

- Install in reverse order of removal, paying close attention to installation notes and proper electrical and fuel connections.
