SUBJECT:
M42 - Engine Control Module DME 1.7.2 Fault Code 41

MODEL:
318i and 318iA vehicles produced 1/94 - 12/95

Situation:

A CUSTOMER COMPLAINT pertaining to the following may be received:

^ The engine is difficult to start when HOT.

^ The "Check Engine" lamp is illuminated and fault code 41 is stored in the DME.

*^ Engine starts then immediately stalls.*

^ Engine will start if accelerator is depressed but will stall once released.

*Correction:

An updated idle control valve and DME EPROM are available for vehicles produced from 1/94 - 12/95 and should be installed if no problem is found with the air mass meter and its associated wiring. If the EPROM in the engine control module is not removable, a new control module with the updated software program needs to be obtained.*

*Procedure:

If a CUSTOMER COMPLAINT is received and no problems are found with the air flow meter or the associated wiring:*

1. Replace the currently installed idle control valve with P/N 13 41 1 433 627.

2. Determine if the EPROM in the control module is removable. Refer to the illustration below for more information on how to identify if the EPROM is soldered into the module.

If the letters OS appear on the white bar-coded label (1) on the cover of the DME, the EPROM is not removable.

If OS does not appear on the label (1), then the EPROM is removable.

a. If the EPROM in the control module is not removable a new updated engine control module (P/N 12 14 1 429 767) should be ordered. The engine control module needs to be variant coded (recode) to the vehicle into which it is installed as indicated below.

b. If the EPROM in the control module is removable install the latest DME EPROM and variant code (recode) the engine control module as indicated below.

NOTE:
The replacement EPROM P/N 01 00 1 469 768 is valid for vehicles with EWS II or without EWS II.

3. Follow the coding procedure provided using programming software 6.0:

a. Select: "2 DME Variant Code"

b. Select: "1 Exchange Control Unit"

c. Select: "4 M40/42/43"

d. "M40/42/43 4-Cyl. has been selected ? Y/N"
Select Y

e. "Is the vehicle fitted with a DME M1.7.3 (M43 engine from 9/95) ? Y/N" Select N

f. Select: 1 "New Coding"

g. Select: 1 "Adopt code from old control unit"
Follow the procedure indicated once selection is made.

OR

h. Select 2 "Enter code manually" (See table for Variant Code)
Follow the procedure indicated once selection is made.

4. Clear all fault codes stored in the DME.

5. Verify proper engine operation by starting engine 3 times.

6. Check if any faults were reset in the DME.
