Wiper Assembly Replacement

CAUTION: Important when engine bonnet raised to working position.
Do not switch on windscreen wipers with the engine hood raised.

In case of unfavorable tolerances, the wiper arm on driver's side could collide with the engine hood and windscreen when the wipers are switched on.
Remove fuse for windscreen wipers to avoid damaging engine bonnet and windscreen.
Remove windshield wiper arms.




- Unscrew left and right screws (1).
- Unscrew nut (2). Remove earthing cable.




- Disconnect left and right gas-pressure springs after removing retainers from gas-pressure spring attachment points.





- Twist engine bonnet (1) forward as far as stop (2).




- Fit special tool 51 2 140 onto suspension points for gas strut.




- Unscrew left and right bolts.




- Unclip radiator grill at top and lift out.




- Unscrewing cable-channel screws.




- Press wiring harness to one side. Remove screws.




- Pull out air collector in upwards direction.




S50:
- Read fault memory.
- Remove container for intensive cleaning fluid (1) and place to one side.
- Remove coolant expansion container (2) and place to one side. Coolant hoses remain connected.





- Remove soundproofing sheet.




- Unscrew cover screws and remove cover.

Installation:
- Rubber grommets of openings for battery positive cable must be installed correctly in openings (1) and (2).
- Water-tightness




- Disconnect control-unit plug-in connections.
- Place wiring harness to one side.





- Remove screws (1 to 4).




- Unscrew bolts (1 and 2) and remove holder.




- Unfasten plug connection on end wall and/or on wiper motor.




- Unscrew holder of plug-in connection. This is the only way in which the wiper assembly can be removed past the plug-in connection.


CAUTION: Do not push plug-in connection into passenger compartment.





- Cover inside and edges of cowl panelling with plastic sheet or similar. This will prevent scratching the cowl panelling when removing wiper console.





- Wrap insulating tape around wiper shaft on driver side to prevent scratching cowl panelling during removal.





- Work wiper console out of body.








Installation:
- Tie back wiring on holder with a cable strap.




- Connect plug-in connection.






CAUTION: Always keep to tightening sequence for mounting screws.
Non-conformance leads to body damage.

- Tighten screws so that they are finger tight.

Installation:
- Note tightening sequence and tightening torque specification.
- Tighten screw (4), then screw (1), then screw (2), then screw (3).





Support angle:
- Tighten screw (1) and then screw (2) to specification.


CAUTION: Make sure rubber grommets are mounted correctly in cable openings when installing cable duct.


Penetration of water could otherwise cause malfunction in motor electrical circuit.
Installation:
Only install in following sequence:
1. Run wiper motor to parked position.
2. Switch off wipers.
3. Fit wiper arms.
4. Close engine bonnet.
5. Fit wiper blades.
