Steel Panel Operation

STEEL PANEL OPERATION - All except E31

When the open position is selected at the switch, the motor drives the cables. The top mechanism drops the rear support onto the headliner panel causing a metal tab on the rear support bar to engage with a slot on the top surface of the headliner panel.

Simultaneously, the rotary catch or link arm (model year dependent) disengages from the inner cable. Since the crossmember is connected to the outer bowden cable, the sunroof and headliner are driven rearward by the outer bowden cable.

When the Vent position is selected at the switch the motor drives the cables in the other direction. The link arm or rotary catch fully engage with the rearward driven cable pulling the headliner back approximately 12Omm.

Simultaneously, the outer cable drives the panel mechanism upward raising the rear support rail and sunroof panel to the vent position.
