Removing or installing front or rear wheel
Caution:
Wheel was balanced electronically.
Use the following procedures to avoid transformation errors and imbalance.
Loosen wheel bolts.
Wheel positioned with valve facing down.
If several wheels are removed at the same time, mark installation location of wheels on tires with chalk.
To avoid errors, mark out wheel in relation to wheel hub.
To avoid imbalance, mark out lockable wheel bolt in relation to wheel.
Release wheel bolts, remove wheel.
Wheel bolt variants:
a) Wheel bolt - galvanized
b) Wheel bolt - black chrome plated
c) Wheel bolt - black chrome plated and lockable
d) Coded black chrome-plated wheel bolt
Note for coded lockable wheel bolts:
In the event of the adapter being missing, use a suitable adapter from the wheel bolt adapter set, special tool 36 1 300 for releasing the lockable wheel bolts.
Remove dirt, grease residue and rust from contact surface (1) of brake disk/disk wheel.
If grease residues are found in the wheel bolt hole are remove the brake disk and clean the wheel hub/brake disk contact surfaces.
Remove and install brake disk, refer to Brakes and Traction Control.
Caution: Brake disk/disk wheel and brake disk/wheel hub contact surfaces must be free of grease. To remove grease, use BMW workshop universal cleaner, or equivalent.
Check brake disk retaining bolt (1) for secure seating; retaining bolt must under no circumstances protrude above contact surface (2) of brake disk/disk wheel.
Always replace brake disk retaining bolt after final installation of brake disk.
Tightening Torque, brake disk retaining bolt, refer to Brakes and Traction Control.
Remove dirt, grease residue and rust from contact surface (1) of brake disk/disk wheel.
Caution: Disk wheel/brake disk contact surface must be free of grease. To remove grease, use BMW workshop universal cleaner, or equivalent.
Apply a thin coat of grease to wheel centering (1) in disk wheel.
Grease for wheel centering, use BMW approved grease or equivalent.
Clean wheel bolts and threads for damage, replace, if necessary.
Replace rusty wheel bolts.
In the case of used wheel bolts, apply an extremely thin coating of engine oil to the threads and tapers before reinstalling them.
Caution: Do not apply oil to new wheel bolts.
With no strain applied to disk wheel, insert wheel studs and tighten in diagonal and even sequence; disk wheel must rest uniformly against brake disk.
Using torque wrench, firmly tighten wheel studs in diagonal and even sequence. Tightening Torque for wheel studs, refer to Specifications.
Caution: Under no circumstances use pneumatic or power screwdrivers to install and tighten the wheel bolts.
