PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
Storage Lid Protective Cap

MODELS:
318i Convertible

Situation:
If the rear bow of the soft top is not held far up enough when opening and closing the storage compartment lid, the leading edge of the lid can hit the top frame, damaging the vinyl covering on the lid.

A cap to protect the lid has been developed, and was phased into production in 3/95. A Service Action will be performed on all cars produced prior to the production change to install the caps so that the vinyl covers are not damaged.

Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action affects all 1994 and 1995 318i Convertibles produced from the start of production through March 1995.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Model Chassis Number Ranges
318iC EC82000 - EC84675
318iAC ED15000 - ED17578

Correction:
Open the storage lid and pull off the rubber lip and attaching rivets from each side of the lid.

Install the new cover cap in the appropriate color with new push rivets in the existing holes.

Side Color Part Number
Left Black 51 17 8 205 043
Right Black 51 17 8 205 044
Left Dark Gray 51 17 8 205 045
Right Dark Gray 51 17 8 205 046
Left Beige 51 17 8 205 047
Right Beige 51 17 8 205 048

In addition, four rivets, part number 51 11 1 908 077 are required.

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action is assigned code number 141. After the vehicle is checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-050) and:

a) Emboss your BMW dealer warranty' number in the middle of the label (1).

b) Punch out code number 141 printed on the label (2).

c) Bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Status:
Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry.
