General Module Fault Code 86

MODEL:
5 Series (E39)

Situation:

Fault Code 86 (Relay Sticking) can set in fault memory of GM III in certain E39 vehicles for no apparent reason. Diagnosis reveals no malfunction and no cause for this fault to set. There is no customer complaint associated with this fault being set.

Cause:

With the change from GM Hardware 14 to Hardware 15, the Software level (below Software Number 14) was not completely changed, resulting in an erroneous fault being set.

Correction:

If this fault is present with no malfunctions of the central locking system from the trunk lock, and the General Module bears Hardware Number 15 and a Software Number below 14, this fault should be ignored.
