What Is Control Module Programming?

What Is Control Module Programming?

Websters dictionary defines the word programming as, "...providing a computer with a set of instructions for solving a problem."

Starting with the DME M3.1 engine control system and up, engine control modules where no longer variant encodable. They became programmed as unique control modules for a specific variation of the system. With the introduction of GS 8.55, Electronic Transmission Control systems also tell into the category of programmable systems.

The programming procedure installs only the data necessary to function in one specific system. Programmable Powertrain Control Modules are available in two conditions:
1. A "basic" state. The control module does not contain any data. The technician is responsible for programming the control module using the MoDiC.
2. Factory programmed. In some rare instances the control module(s) may not be capable of dealership programming. This could be due to a hardware/software compatibility issue. These control modules are only available as factory preprogrammed replacements. In this situation, it will be noted in the Parts system and in a related Service Information bulletin.
