Replacing Rear Cover Gasket on Final Drive

Note: After completion of work, check transmission fluid level.

Caution:
Use only the approved gear oil in this manual transmission.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the transmission.

Recycling:
Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.
Drain final drive oil. Oil filler and drain plug.
Tightening torque, refer to 33 11 3AZ.





E46/6 (compact):
Remove spare wheel.
Release retaining screws of spare wheel bracket (1).
Tilt spare wheel bracket (1) downwards.

Remove stabilizer bar at rear.

Remove tension strut.

Remove propeller shaft from drive flange.

Note: In event of oil loss, always check gearbox for traces of wear and/or damage.





Support final drive with transmission lifter and special tool 33 4 390.

Caution: Observe distance between special tool 33 4 390 and dust protection sleeve (1). If dust protection sleeve (1) is damaged (bent), this may result in contact with flange!





Release screws.
Tightening torque, refer to 33 17 1AZ.





Release nut and remove screw.
Tightening torque, refer to 33 17 1AZ.

Lower lifter.





Release screws.
Tightening torque, refer to 33 11 1AZ.

Remove cover.

Clean sealing face on final drive and on cover.

Installation:
Replace seal.





M47/M57 with manual transmission:
Remove bracket for vibration damper.
Tightening torque, refer to 33 11 1AZ.

Note: Retaining screws (1) for bracket on final drive are 5 mm longer.
