Replacing front axle differential

Note: To remove front axle differential, lower front axle support. There is no need to perform a front axle alignment check. After completing work, top up front axle differential fluid level.

Caution!
Use only the approved gear oil in this front axle differential. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the differential!

Disconnect battery, grounding strap to body.





Assemble special tool 00 0 200 and special tool 00 0 201/202/204/208 and attach.
Secure special tool 00 0 200 to front engine suspension eye.

Note: Contact faces (1) of special tool 00 0 208 must rest on screw connection of both side walls.





Tighten down screws (1 and 2).






Release nut at top on right engine mount.
Release nut at bottom on left engine mount.





Raise engine approx. 10 mm with special tool 00 0 200.
Remove engine underguard at front, middle and rear.
Remove front propeller shaft.
Remove control arm from front axle support.

Note: Output shaft is not pressed out of drive flange.





Swivel bearing (1), output shaft (2) and control arm (3) remain together as a single unit during removal and installation. ;

Remove swivel bearing on left and right.
Remove output shafts.
Unfasten steering spindle from steering gear.





As shown in illustration, support front axle support (1) with special tool 00 2 030 in conjunction with special tool 31 2 220 and a block of wood (2).
Detach front axle support from engine carrier.






Detach vent hose.





Release screws (1) and remove front axle differential.
Axle to Oil Pan 45 Nm
Carefully feed out front axle differential towards bottom.

Installation:





Replace sealing ring (1).
Insert sealing ring (1) in groove.
Coat sealing ring (1) with antiseize agent.

Caution!
Replace output shaft radial seal.





Open filler plug (1) and check fluid level in front axle differential.
Fluid level to lower edge of filler plug.
Filler Plug 65 Nm

Note: Replace sealing ring.
