SUBJECT
Fuel Tank Vent Line Fitting Weld
MODEL
E53 X5 produced from 8/14/00 - 9/8/00
SITUATION
The fuel tank ventilation line fitting located on the top left rear of the fuel tank may not have been plastic welded properly during production on the affected vehicles. As a result fuel vapors may escape from the tank.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves X5 vehicles which were produced from 8/14/00 - 9/8/00.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
Replace the fuel tank on all affected vehicles.
PROCEDURE
Refer to the E53 X5 repair manual group 16 section 16 11 031 for complete instructions on replacing the fuel tank.
PARTS INFORMATION
Ordering Procedure:
Due to the limited number of vehicles affected and the limited number of fuel tanks available, it will be necessary to use the last seven (7) digits of the VIN as the purchase order number. The VIN purchase order number will be checked against the master list and, if they are in agreement, a fuel tank will be allocated to the center. Orders placed WITHOUT a VIN number WILL BE CANCELED. Orders placed for vehicles not on the master list WILL BE CANCELED. Please order all parts as shown only in the quantities specified. The fuel tank is the only part that will require release by VIN. All other parts involved in this repair will allocate normally.
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 287. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-155) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 287 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the applicable BMW Emissions Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
