SUBJECT
Door Edge Protection Seal Peeling Apart

MODEL
[NEW] E46 (3 Series coupe) produced up to 12/2004)

SITUATION

The flock-coated portion of the door edge protection may peel apart from the rubber seal.

Note:
For loose door edge protection seals on the B-pillar, please refer to SI B51 04 01.

CAUSE

Insufficient adhesive bonding between rubber and flock-coated portion of door edge protection seal.

PROCEDURE

[NEW] Adhesive bonding between rubber and flock-coated portion of door edge protection seal has been improved. Replace both door seals with the new improved parts.

Note:
The following procedure should be followed when replacing doors seals to prevent the possibility of the door seal coming loose from the door pinch weld.

Remove the damaged seal from the vehicle. Remove any adhesive tape remaining on the body and clean both sides of the pinch weld with Wurth Clean-Solve (article number 08909381) or 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (part number 08984) and allow to dry.

Apply Wurth Rubber Glue (article number 0890100015) to a 15 mm wide strip on both sides of the pinch weld in the area indicated by the arrows in the illustration, let dry for approximately 20 minutes. Do not apply the adhesive to the seal.

Install the new seal in the proper position and close the door to check for adequate clearance to the inner door panel.

Allow drying for approximately 1 hour at room temperature.
